Revision as of 07:34, 8 January 2009

The WoW Model Viewer is a program that allows users to see all the models for characters, armor, weapons, monsters, spell graphics in the game files. Additionally, it enables people to take screenshots, add backgrounds, and add weapons/armor to a character of one's choice.

The latest version (v0.5.09d) was released on 15th May 2008.

— the latest version is needed to view the new files associated with the 2.4.2 patch.

Unfortunately, the program currently is not usable due to patch 3.0.2. although an unofficial version was released for this patch, the next patch, 3.0.3, rendered the unofficial version useless as well. The programs creators are currently trying to develop the program for Wrath of the Lich King, but so far no new versions have appeared.

The original author, John Steele (aka Darjk), has currently left the project and won't be back till 2010. This could mean no complete official version till then, however the other creators have started seeking aid from coders with C++ experience to help speed the process up.

Unofficial version

An unofficial version was created set mostly for those that make machinima, however, will work for any basic need. Visit wowprovider.com for notes and link to download v0.6.0.2.

Machinima

WMV are widely used by machinimists with the "blue- (or green-)screen-effect", because there are less limits there than in the real game.

WMV in WoWWiki

Texture files pulled out from WMV are not allowed on the wiki. In-game screenshots are preferred, but if you cannot find one it is okay to upload from WMV, as long as the model can be found in-game. If you are going to upload a picture to the wiki, we recommend it to be saved as a PNG (that way it will be transparent, thus allowing it to be used without a frame). The images shown below are bad examples as these have the default blue background.
It is also recommended that you use a image editing program to crop it to reduce space around the model. If you need a editing program, we recommend the GIMP. For further image guidelines, read WW:IMG.
