Water Shield is a Nature-based shaman buff. The spell improves mana regeneration, and when taking damage, it restores mana to the caster. Water Shield can only proc every few seconds and has three charges.

Being an elemental shield, Water Shield cannot be used at the same time as Lightning Shield or Earth Shield. It is however possible to use Water Shield or Lightning Shield on yourself while Earth Shield is up on another target.

The cooldown before another orb will trigger is roughly three seconds. The mana regeneration provided functions like MP5, thus is not affected by the five second rule. This regeneration stacks with all other mana-regeneration effects, both from gear and from abilities like Mana Spring Totem and Blessing of Wisdom.


Improved Shields increases the mana returned from each orb by 15%.

Improved Water Shield causes an orb to be consumed each time the caster gets a critical effect with Healing Wave, Lesser Healing Wave, or Riptide.

Glyph of Water Mastery will increase its passive mana regeneration by 30%.

Glyph of Water Shield will increase the number of charges by 1.

Tips and tactics

Since cost no mana and provides a passive bonus, Water Shield should be up whenever you aren't using Lightning Shield or Earth Shield on yourself. It is a good practice for Elemental and Restoration shamans to make sure Water Shield is always active.

It is generally a good idea to refresh Water Shield often, it costs no mana and you might not have time to recast it later. An experienced player can usually ensure that the buff is up 100% of the time.

If possible, always refresh Water Shield before the last charge is used up. If all three charges are consumed, you will lose the passive mana regeneration until you recast it.

Patch changes

WoW Icon 16x16/Bc icon Patch 2.0.1 (05-Dec-2006): Added as a new ability for The Burning Crusade.
Bc icon Patch 2.3.0 (13-Nov-2007): Mana cost removed. Mana gained per orb doubled. Duration reduced from 10 minutes to 1 minute. At the end of the duration, mana is gained for each remaining globe.
Bc icon Patch 2.3.2 (2008-01-08): Duration back to 10 minutes. No longer grants mana when expiring. Now provides passive mana regeneration instead.
Bc icon/Wrath-Logo-Small Patch 3.0.2 (14-Oct-2008): Ranks 1-6 added, making the spell trainable at level 20. The spell was previously not available until level 62.
