Maps Edit

FYI: looks like our maps and coordinate templates are broken as of the end of December. I've filed a ticket, as it doesn't appear to be anything we've done here. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 01:41, January 25, 2015 (UTC)

Maps/coordinates should all be working again, thanks to some investigation by Rappy Winky Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 21:26, February 6, 2015 (UTC)

Hearthstone quiz Edit

Heya Winky I've been notified that we've got an ask from Blizzard for a Hearthstone-based quiz that seems to center around the classes in the game. They'll probably provide most of the questions, and I'll likely supply a handful myself.

You can see an example of something similar here (if it doesn't open in FF, try Chrome, etc.). One thing to note is that there will be an option to close it out for those that aren't interested in taking it.

Would it be all right to include it on WoWWiki as well? (Edit: This would run for approximately two months, but could be talked down to a month.) Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 17:23, February 18, 2015 (UTC)

If it's okay with you, it's okay with me. If it were something based on Heroes of the Storm, I would still be okay with it, but maybe make it last less long. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 18 Feb 2015 10:51 AM Pacific
I'll push for the month-long rather than two month-long duration, then Smiley Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 18:56, February 18, 2015 (UTC)

Links to follower pagesEdit

Hey Fandyllic,

Assey Westfall brought up an issue with the Follower page here. The links in the table point to pages following the naming convention "NPCname (follower)". However, no pages exist following that naming convention. A lot of the existing NPC pages already contain WoD follower-related info where applicable somewhere on their page (this is how I've been integrating new WoD info into existing NPC articles personally). Changing these links to point directly to the NPC pages (without the "(follower)" tag) would activate many links within the follower table which are currently broken. Is this something I can do, or is there a specific reasoning behind having separate "follower" pages for each NPC?
-Sitb (talk) 15:30, February 20, 2015 (UTC)

The main reason I made a distinction between NPC and follower pages is that the tooltips can't show both NPC and follower info at the same time easily. My goal is to make {{follower}} links show follower info and {{NPC}} links show NPC info, since many of the followers have quite a bit of separate and distinct NPC info as they give out quests and such. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 20 Feb 2015 12:43 PM Pacific
Ah, I was wondering if tooltips maybe had something to do with it. Going forward then, would you suggest I keep making pages as I have been and wait until the "follower" template is finalized and working before doing anything differently/creating separate follower pages? For the tooltips, is there a way to extract just the follower-related info from an NPC page? If so, perhaps I can use a standard format for a specific section of an NPC article where all the follower-related info is contained on a page, allowing it to be extracted with ease for the tooltips. I'll keep an eye out for any new follower pages if you create them, and I'll follow whatever format you decide.
-Sitb (talk) 19:49, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
The {{Follower}} template seems to work well enough now. As nice as it would be to put everything on one page, it would probably take a massive addition to the {{npcbox}} template and someone more clever than me to extract the follower specific content. I think it's doable, but I'm sure I'd muck it up, if I tried it.
You can use NPC Official alliance mini-icon Shelly Hamby and follower Official alliance mini-icon Shelly Hamby as a model for now. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Feb 2015 12:16 PM Pacific
Understood. I had noticed what you did with the Shelly Hamby (follower) page. I'll replicate that format in the future when I create pages for NPCs who are also followers and create the "follower" page as well as the "NPC" page. Winky
-Sitb (talk) 20:34, February 23, 2015 (UTC)
I will experiment with the all-in-one concept. The more I look at template stuff, it seems like it should be possible. What scares me is the Javascript stuff that drives the tooltips. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Feb 2015 3:07 PM Pacific

Domain Edit

Ah, apologies for not making sure to link Bert's forum post across all admins earlier (buried in HotS updates). It explains things in greater depth, but the short of it is that they're moving all domains to end with "" due to technical reasons. Bert approached me earlier (I wasn't permitted to say anything then) about what name we should go by, and I thought it best to continue using something as close to, however redundant the url appears. It can be changed, however, if needed, to something else so long as it still ends in

We still "own" the domain, so people don't have to change their bookmarks and it won't affect rankings or anything like that. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 15:42, May 24, 2015 (UTC)

Just a heads up. I can't log into WoWWiki directly and I suspect anyone else who's account has an active server-side session can't either, because the domain that their client cookies are tied to, conflict with the wowwiki domain name change. I had to log in through another wiki and had to clear cookies on my end first. Basically I couldn't make any wiki changes, like edit a page, on the server session I had, and couldn't log-out even. Server sessions persist even after days or however long you are allowed to "stay signed in". Others might be having issues and not be able to figure out how to do anything about it and may think are dead in the water. All cookies, and in-part server side sessions, are based on domain name. Just wanted to let you know. They, Facepalm's Wikia buddies, probably want to flush the server session cache, which probably for modern Wikia wikis are persistent between server boots. Celess22 (talk) 23:47, May 24, 2015 (UTC)
Ah good! I'm glad someone finally explained that, thanks Celess22! I was in the same boat for a few days and was unable to determine why. I thought I was going insane and messed up my account settings in some way. A little embarrassing, actually and I'm really surprised that we didn't receive a more evident/visible warning from Wikia before the change. It's not a good thing that several of us Admins were somewhat "locked out" of the Wiki without a real explanation. Considering this issue potentially affects every single user who is constantly logged into the wiki since before the domain change, would it be worth posting something more visible on the main portal, for example?
-Sitb (talk) 21:36, May 26, 2015 (UTC)
I totally take the blame for not notifying each one of you individually and changing our community messages to reflect the change when Bert posted this on the 19th. It would have given us a few more days to gather feedback and throw it back at Bert before the holiday weekend. I was buried under a metric ton of HotS updates and another Wikia-centric project; not an excuse, but just at least letting you know it wasn't something I just shrugged at.
I'm not privy to how the decision was made or even in on whether it should have been made - that being said, if you want to ask questions, technical or otherwise, or even if you have concerns about how this came about - please feel free to throw them at me and I will gather it all together and forward it to Bert. Any response I get I'll pass back, if Bert doesn't show up and do it himself. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 01:22, May 27, 2015 (UTC)

Stub templates Edit

Hey there Winky I wanted to pass some new page stubs past you before I potentially implemented them. Basically I condensed the information (and cleaned a couple of them) to give them a lower profile on the page. They also have unique icons so people can tell at a glance what page they've stumbled into. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 23:25, June 26, 2015 (UTC)

Portable Infoboxes Edit

I'm sure you saw this coming Tongueout. I've indicated that, if infoboxes are converted here, it's likely going to be a long process so that we can get the tweaking down exactly as we need it via css. But here's the obligatory outreach:

We're reaching out to a few of our top communities, hoping to get you on board with the migration to the new infobox markup. And we have tools to help!

Why we’re doing this

Simply put: Most current infobox structure translates very poorly to mobile experiences, and indeed any device that doesn't use desktop-style displays. On desktops and laptops, they often look amazing. The problem is that Wikia's traffic is trending mobile.

There is an important graph from our forum post about infoboxes a couple weeks back.

Mobile is the future. Not just for Wikia, but for the web as a whole. Take a look at the recent trends and future growth predictions for mobile traffic - it's staggering.

We partnered with the Wikia community to create this new markup to make sure that your hard work can be displayed on mobile devices (as well as any future technologies) easily and without any new coding conventions. It'll take some effort up front, to be sure, but we're here to help, and the work you put in now will pay for itself tenfold in the future.

Tools we’ve designed to ease the process

We've enabled two new features on your community. One is a tool for migrating the "old" infobox code to the new markup. It identifies templates on your wikia that look like infobox templates and places a box on the right rail of the template page. When you click the "Generate draft markup" button in this box, it opens a new tab containing a draft of your infobox using the new markup.

The second is a new feature on Special:Insights that will highlight which infoboxes on your wikia have not been migrated to the new infobox markup. It's fairly intuitive - you can click on the infobox title link itself to see the old markup, or simply click the "Convert!" button on the right, which performs the same action as the "Generate draft markup" button. Keep in mind the tool is not perfect, however, and false positives may be returned.

This is our help page for the new markup. If you'd like, I can help get things rolling by converting a template or two to draft form as an example, as well as watching this forum post for any questions that can be forwarded to the powers that be.

Yeah, it's obvious to me why this is happening, but I just wish they would do something less awkward to help author for mobile, like a special tag to control whether something renders on mobile or not. This infobox thing doesn't help for the many other things that don't render well on mobile, especially tables. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 24 Jul 2015 10:35 AM Pacific

WoW: Legion Edit

Hello Fandyllic! I'm a very new member around here and I made quite a fair bit of contribution to the setting up of the WoW: Legion page. As the influx of information was mostly driven by enthusiasm I may have made some errors. I hope you understand and I'm sorry if I have caused any trouble. I hope to further contribute to the information-gathering for the newest expansion.

If there is any way I can help to make the presentation for the Legion page even better, please tell.

Thank you!

Elements disabled Edit

FYI: Should be a message coming out soon about why things like JS and verbatim are being emergency disabled if you haven't seen any news about it elsewhere. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 17:52, August 10, 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I was just going to ask about that. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10 Aug 2015 10:02 AM Pacific

Disable anons Edit

I know we discussed whether to enable anon editing when we made the switch. From what I've seen I don't think it's necessarily helped or hurt us either way, though it really depends on the week Tongueout. So I could go either way tbh; asking the others wouldn't hurt, of course. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 18:17, August 10, 2015 (UTC)

I would actually prefer better and more tools for dealing with anons, but those don't seem to be forthcoming. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10 Aug 2015 11:00 AM Pacific

Wikia Community Connect Edit

Hey Fandyllic. I'm writing you today to let you know about Wikia Community Connect, our first-ever Admin Summit, which we're going to be holding from September 9th to September 11th at our office. We are inviting one administrator from 30 major communities for this, and I wanted to invite you as the admin representative for WoWWiki.

Community Connect will give each admin representative a chance to meet and interact with Wikia Staff and fellow admins from across Wikia, hear about our product vision and plans, and learn more about Wikia's marketing and branding. This will also enable admins to provide feedback directly to Wikia about our plans for the future.

If you attend, we'll pay for all of your event-related expenses, so you don't have to worry about the cost. Please let me know by the end of the day tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11th if you can attend. Sorry for the quick turnaround, but the event is coming up quick.

Thanks! - Brandon Rhea@Wikia(talk) 22:41, August 10, 2015 (UTC)

I should be able to go. It sounds fun. Replied on your Community message wall. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10 Aug 2015 3:42 PM Pacific
Hey. Following up here since I didn't hear from you on my wall. Two questions for you. First, can you tell me your t-shirt size? (Please do so ASAP, even if you're still working out whether you can attend, since we need to turn in sizes tomorrow.) Second, is your email address in your account your preferred email address? Thanks! - Brandon Rhea@Wikia(talk) 21:28, August 18, 2015 (UTC)

Infoboxes Edit

Portable infoboxes at Raylan13's talk page...

I'm going to start on the portable conversions today, going from least to most used. I don't anticipate getting a huge amount done; for all of them I'll refrain from hitting publish until you can take a look at them, if you'd like. I think what I'll do for the css is create some MediaWiki pages and do some verbatim - at least until we can tell if they'll all share those css changes Tongueout. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 21:23, August 25, 2015 (UTC)

The draft is automatically generated as a subpage, i.e. Template:Whatever/Draft, so should work Winky. I decided to place the ones I've finished in a sandbox list for easier access. They can be struck out when/if approved and published. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 21:59, August 25, 2015 (UTC)
No, that's just what I'm doing Tongueout Everything can actually be done via CSS - I'm just being lazy and using verbatim; it'll all get ported into the regular css once everything is complete. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 15:44, August 27, 2015 (UTC)
For simple if functions, think of it like this -
<data source="whatever"><format>what the value is if the parameter is filled</format><default>what the displayed value is if the parameter is empty, if desired</default></data>

The new infoboxes are designed to hide any parameter that doesn't have data, so it simplifies things in some cases.

More complex if and/or switch functions have to be done with <navigation></navigation>. You can check out my Hearthstone card template for one of the most complex ones I've had to deal with. It isn't published because there's currently a glitch with some gif sizing. Check out the history to compare versions and hopefully it will help.

I'm at PAX now, so I'll be back Tuesday evening/Wednesday during the day for more questions Winky Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 19:05, August 30, 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, the styling is definitely the easiest part, imho. Check out my handy dandy css styling list here - just disregard the other sections on that page, as it's always a work in progress and may be out of date. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 02:25, September 2, 2015 (UTC)

couple of things for "Portal:Main" Edit

1) Portal_talk#obsolete_ad?_(Selfie_Scavenger_Hunt)

2) Portal_talk#link_glitch_in_"Portal_talk:Main"

I noticed a couple of additional things for Portal:Main (and its "Talk" page). Giving you a heads-up, per your request. ;-) Thanks. -- Fwcain (talk) 05:56, September 26, 2015 (UTC)

Main page Edit

What do you think of this main page overhaul? Virtually all the components now live on the page, with the exception of some of the more complicated (like Featured Article), that way we don't have to hunt down which "part" of the main page we have to edit. The only thing that needs a tweak is the help/guidelines section so it fits within the left side.

I'd also like to propose stripping everything from the individual portal pages (i.e. Legion, etc.) except for the actual expansion-related content. That way we have a lot of room to showcase content rather than limiting ourselves to whatever space is left over after placing what's typically main page material. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 19:45, September 26, 2015 (UTC)

I ended up tweaking that section so it fits now - so now it's been carried over to the live page.
I'll start working on each individual portal page slowly, starting with Legion. After all is said and done, we'll finally be able to get rid of all the separate top, bottom, whatever components :P Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 03:10, September 27, 2015 (UTC)

Tooltips for the German WoWWikiEdit

Hello Fandyllic!

To answer your question: Yes, I still need help with tooltips. I adopted the German WoWWiki half a year ago and tried to look for ways to implement tooltips, expecting it to be relatively easy. Needless to say, I failed miserably when trying to understand the structure of your tooltip template. Now, after months of working on WoWWiki, I started to play around with templates on my second wiki for testing purposes, beginning to understand most parts of the template structure and the function of the connected templates, too. Still, my level of understanding is not enough for me to try a transition of the templates to the WoWWiki. Can you please help me?

Crypoc (talk) 19:01, October 1, 2015 (UTC)

Hello again, the tooltip looks really fine! Thanks again for taking care of this matter. I will copy the CSS over as soon as you give me the details. Crypoc (talk) 20:20, October 2, 2015 (UTC)
The CSS content of the linked page has been copied over. I will rename anything visible and the quality classes with the German names in time, as you suggested. Crypoc (talk) 20:50, October 2, 2015 (UTC)

German WoWWiki tooltips againEdit

Hello, I have requested the codeadmin from the Wikia staff, since there's still some JS stuff that's not done yet. Waiting for their response. Meanwhile, how far are we into the process of implementing the tooltips over at our wiki? I have noticed that the tooltip works quite well, but there is one slight problem when copying over a filled tooltip aswell as when filling it from scratch. When looking at the Thunderfury page, you may notice that the text behind the braces still gets put into the tooltip. Maybe a problem with the brace count in the template?
Crypoc (talk) 22:22, October 4, 2015 (UTC)

Trying to figure out how to fix the problem and prevent stuff that shouldn't be part of the tooltip box shooing up inside box. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4 Oct 2015 2:30 PM Pacific
I've tried the corrected version on several pages, seems to work without any hickups. I just got the codeadmin rights, so the .JS parts can be taken care of, too.
Anyway, I stumbled upon a minor flaw when using the {{item}} template here, where it doesn't show the quality color on the linked item name. Seems like some quality values need to be translated, gonna try to follow that up now. Crypoc (talk) 14:03, October 5, 2015 (UTC)
{{item}} template works, used the code provided by you and adjusted the quality names accordingly. Should've thought of looking into the necessary css parts in the first place, then again I remember you even recommending me to do so. Crypoc (talk) 16:12, October 5, 2015 (UTC)
Hello again! I gotta say, the tooltips look just fabulous. This is a major step up in providing more content to the visitors, since our wiki was pretty much abandoned for literally years. That being said, may I suggest going a little further and trying to make the mouseover/hover tooltips work? Crypoc (talk) 00:31, October 8, 2015 (UTC)
I copied over the content and forced the reload, but no tooltips are popping up.
Crypoc (talk) 15:42, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

Monobook Edit

I was wondering if you could take a gander at what Monobook looks like. TwoTailedFox reports that the button menu at the top is clipped by the article body and the bottom has a band of white from the standard Monobook skin. I don't know if it's something we did or Wikia did, though I suspect the latter. TTF can provide you more details Winky Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 16:44, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

Message Wall, etc. Edit

Given plans that are on the horizon, I'm all for switching over to Message Wall and the new Forums. Article comments, however, I'm on the fence about. I've had good experiences with them (good comments, pointers, etc.) and bad (massive spamming of nonsense). I'm leaning toward not including them. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 16:46, October 8, 2015 (UTC)

Portals Edit

I'm not sure if you want any of the rest of it fixed, or if Legion through Cata are the way they are intended, so I'll stop there. If you look at the ones afterward (previous releases) the menus fit. If you want a responsive version for all of them let me know. Thanks :) Celess22 (talk) 15:59, October 18, 2015 (UTC)

Classification Edit

It looks like something we'll only benefit from, and it doesn't look like anything catastrophic could happen Tongueout. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 01:28, October 28, 2015 (UTC)

Hello there! I'm a former member by the name of Kirochi. I'm trying to recover my account but I'm not receiving confirmation e-mail on any e-mailbox I was using at the time. Do you think there's a way for me to make sure which address is registered in there? Also, would it be easier through e-mail? My address is olivierhandelsman at gmail.-- 14:44, November 3, 2015 (UTC)

I would use Special:Contact/general and give Wikia staff your e-mail address. I don't have access to the user accounts DB. If you're having problems using Special:Contact/general, I'll hook you up with a Wikia staff contact who deals more directly with WoWWiki stuff.

Vietnamese WoWWiki Edit

Hi Fandyllic, I'm the one building WoW Wiki site with Vietnamese. Can you help me with these infobox and template?

You can check out my problem here. I copied the source text from the same page on wowwiki, but it seems the infobox_character doesnt work well. I have no idea why this trim-code goes wrong

This infobox - War on this page should face the same problem

Thank you for reading. I'm looking forward to hear your advice soon.

Best regards,

Hi Fandyllic,

Delete user page and subpages Edit

Sorry if this is the incorrect way to ask. I've been a hugely inactive member for years now and I think it's time to just pull off that bandaid. Are you able to delete the user page for Peregrine2976, and all associated subpages? ~My rage bar is blue and I start the fight pissed - Peregrine 03:57, November 9, 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, I can do that. Not sure how one can be "hugely" inactive, though. Winky --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9 Nov 2015 11:10 AM Pacific

Inclusion Of Edit

Hello. According to Matt Burns fel/demonic magic can still be viewed as black magic (or a black magic) from a character's POV and I'm wondering if I should put that in the trivia or at fel magic's description at the very top of the page? Fruitmedley (talk) 20:02, November 23, 2015 (UTC)

You can put it in Trivia, but what is black magic anyway in the Warcraft universe? --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 23 Nov 2015 3:35 PM Pacific

Legion alpha Edit

For edits to the site, I'm defaulting to reverting anything that isn't playable in the alpha. I just started playing last night, and the only thing we currently have access to is the demon hunter starting experience. I want to say there's a dungeon, too, but I haven't looked in that direction. Tongueout

Hopefully tomorrow I'll dive right in and start updating Legion-related stuff (no NDA), assuming I get done with what I need to today. Raylan13@Wikia (talk) 17:36, November 24, 2015 (UTC)

Cool. I didn't get into the Alpha from what I can tell, but that's okay. I've been really busy. If I get in, I'll start adding stuff. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 24 Nov 2015 9:46 AM Pacific

Wikis Edit

Just in case you weren't aware previously, the right-aligned TOC on the Wikis page is not playing nicely with its neighboring content.

Thanks. I tried to make it fit better, but I'm not sure if there is a great solution. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 27 Nov 2015 1:57 PM Pacific
