This article contains lore taken from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

These elder Tauren warriors lead their Tribes in daily life as well as in battle. Ceremoniously decked with the ancient totems of their Tribes, Chiefs uphold the honor and simplicity of Tauren culture. When roused by battle, the gigantic Chiefs employ enormous warblades which are capable of tearing through solid trees with one mighty swipe. The Chiefs are fascinated by the Orcs, especially their young leader, Thrall. The Chiefs see an opportunity to help the Orcs return to their traditional roots by providing a strong example of honor and courage through all Tauren warriors.

Information[]

The Tauren Chieftain is useful for both War Stomp and Endurance Aura. Due to the Chieftain's large size many players have difficulty controlling him. They don't understand how to use him correctly and fail to use him to his full potential. The key is to either keep him away from the enemy, toward the rear of the battle, or to rush him straight into the middle of the enemy then use War Stomp. Whenever he becomes "stuck" use War Stomp to clear some room. Top players have excellent success with the Chieftain.

War Stomp is a great ability. At its highest level War Stomp stuns for as long as 5 seconds and deals 75 damage; while not a lot, the stun is effective against both Heroes and common units alike for your or allied units to pick off the enemy. Shockwave is also effective at killing Heroes as "nuke" damage and support units, though generally getting into the most optimal position is unlikely. Endurance Aura is the Chieftain's most dangerous ability in team matches, as it provides all allied units in range an increase in both attack and movement speed, which stacks with Unholy Frenzy and Bloodlust. Reincarnation allows him to dodge death once every four minutes and thus save the cost of an occasional revive.

For point spending strategies it is recommended to with Endurance Aura and either Shockwave or War Stomp depending on your setup. Shockwave and War Stomp together is ill-advised because the Chieftain will not have enough mana to consistently use both spells at low levels.

Spells and abilities[]

Shockwave[]

BTNShockWave
A wave of force that ripples out from the Hero, causing damage to land units in a line.
Cooldown Mana Cost Range Area of Effect Allowed Targets
8 sec. 90 70 Radius: 15
Width: 2.5
Length: 80
Ground, Structure, Enemy
Level Effect Hero Level Req
1 75 damage each unit (summary 900) 1
2 130 damage each unit (summary 1560) 3
3 200 damage each unit (summary 2400) 5

Shockwave has a damage cap of roughly 12 units affected. Note that this limit will not typically be reached except in team games.

Cast Shockwave on lines of workers mining Gold. Try to cast Shockwave on any troops that are lined up.

War Stomp[]

BTNWarStomp
Slams the ground, stunning and damaging nearby enemy units.
Cooldown Mana Cost Allowed Targets
7 sec. 90 Ground, Enemy, Organic
Level Duration (Hero) Area of Effect Effect Hero Level Req
1 3 (2) sec. 25 30 damage, stun. 1
2 4 (2.5) sec. 30 60 damage, stun. 3
3 5 (3) sec. 35 90 damage, stun. 5

For the best results move into a pack of enemy units then use War Stomp to hit them all.

War Stomp can be used to reveal nearby Shadowmelded units.

Endurance Aura (Passive)[]

PASBTNCommand
Increases the movement speed and attack rate of nearby friendly units.
Area of Effect Allowed Targets
90 Air, Ground, Friend, Self, Vulnerable, Invulnerable
Level Effect Hero Level Req
1 Movement Speed +10%, Attack Rate +5% 1
2 Movement Speed +15%, Attack Rate +10% 3
3 Movement Speed +20%, Attack Rate +15% 5

The Endurance Aura is very helpful to the Orcs and especially helpful to allied units in large team games.

Reincarnation (Ultimate)[]

PASBTNReincarnation
When killed, the Tauren Chieftain will come back to life. The Tauren Chieftain will return with full mana.
Duration Cooldown Effect Hero Level Req
5 sec. 240 sec. Hero comes back to life 6

Reincarnation can allow the Chieftain to take a lot of damage and die on purpose because he can come back to life again. It can also of course allow him to come back to life when he dies by mistake. Reincarnation can save the cost of reviving the Hero, especially at higher levels where the cost and revival time become very high. If the enemy has clearly won and is waiting for him to Resurrect they may kill him again very quickly. When you come back the second time and find yourself surrounded you may wish to use a Scroll of Teleport to get away since you cannot resurrect again.

Since he dodges death once with Reincarnation, experience is only gained when he is killed before Reincarnation is reset.
