Level/Season Edit

I didn't see a mention of this, and I think it's annoying as it grates on my nerves everytime I hear it. I think it should be perfectly fine to say "I'm level 25" or "He's 35" but perhaps not "He's a skull", but rather "I don't know what level" or something like that. My reasoning? Well, I'm an Army cadet in the National Guard, and my brother-in-law works at the FAA Federal Standards District Office, and one thing I've found is that people use the pay grades quite a bit. Not always, of course, because it simply wouldn't make sense to do so. But when it's relevant, we use them.

For instance, as many might know, sergeant can mean 4 different ranks (in Army; Navy, Marines, and Air Force have similar issues) (in ascending order):

  • Sergeant (E-5)
  • Staff Sergeant (E-6)
  • Sergeant First Class (E-7)
  • Master Sergeant (E-8, frequently called fully "Master Sergeant")
  • There are more sergeant ranks, but they are rarely called simply "Sergeant"

So if someone (for whatever reason) needs to indicate that someone is specifically an E-5, they say E-5. And when people give their rank for any reason (if they know that who they're speaking to someone who's familiar), they usually give the grade rather than the name, because the names are different between services, but the grade is the same and renders the same pay.

And servicemen never say "one season ago." Pfft. So when you read my page on any of my characters (of which I have one now), I'll never say "season." Schmidt 20:08, 15 Dec 2005 (EST)

Just to be contrary, I'd like to point out that your experience comes from contemporary military service whereas World of Warcraft appears to be set in more of a pseudo-historical fantasy setting. Like many fantasy settings, the Warcraft one lies more in the pre-industrial type setting, not counting all the gnome/goblin craziness.
In that light, using numerical classifications probably doesn't really apply unless they had "pay grades" in renaissance or previous time periods. The whole idea of level number is a game mechanic and should be thought of that way, so really shouldn't intersect with role-playing as I understand it. I doubt most role-players would find it acceptable to say, "where can I learn rank 4 firebolt spell... mine is only rank 3". Althought the game runs in a digital realm, role-playing is more of an analog activity... ;-) --Fandyllic (talk) 3:30 PM PDT 22 Sep 2006
