Does anyone know the equations for magical resistances? The main WoW site is lacking and it would be very usefull for many people. --Borgil 12:10, 28 November 2005

Ok, anybody can confirm that flask stacks with all other effects? It states that it stacks with potions and spells but not whether it stacks with something like Mark of the Wild. --Sabelaide 11:34, 31 August 2006

Scare BeastEdit

Is this a "nature" spell as listed? The animation and sound make me think shadow... Lorentzforce 16:09, 10 September 2006 (EDT)

Considering the information from thottbot, it actually is Nature. Casting animation unfortunately is not a fact to rely on, as there are several spells which have a casting animation of the "wrong" school (Priest's Fade, Shadowguard, Levitate, and Holy Fire, just to mention some examples). --bfx 11:27, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Image Edit

Resistance Fire Fire
Resistance Nature Nature
Resistance Arcane Arcane
Resistance Frost Frost
Resistance Shadow Shadow

This image, needs to be split up into 5 icons. so we can properly align them for all browsers.. it looks very odd right now. CJ 09:53, 31 October 2006 (EST)

Done. Image:Resistance Fire.png Image:Resistance Nature.png Image:Resistance Arcane.png Image:Resistance Frost.png Image:Resistance Shadow.png   --Mikk (T) 04:06, 5 November 2006 (EST)

Need a Holy image Edit

Don't know where the original images came from, but we need a Holy image. --Fandyllic (talk) 3:37 PM PST 6 Nov 2006

But Holy resistance doesn't exist (why would you want to resist heals :) -- Kirkburn (talk) 19:06, 6 November 2006 (EST)
ingame i guess. there is no holy resist available ingame yet. Paladins / priests can do holy damage.  - CJ talk / cont  02:57, 7 November 2006 (EST)
A holy resistance picture was used long ago, so it does exist. --bfx 04:34, 9 November 2006 (EST)
As for last version of WoW (2.0.1), you now choose what to see in the 2 boxes with facts (General stats/Melee/Ranged/Spell/Defence etc.), Under the "Spell" one you can see different icons when mousing over one of the texts. There it shows a Holy icon. So, I believe "holy" icon now exists ingame? -- FireFly 14:21, 11 December 2006 (EST)
There actually is a value for holy resitance but it is not shown ingame, it was in the first beta, but Blizzard deleted it with the release --Stipa 13:06, 28 December 2006 (EST)

Frost Damage Resist Edit

Frost damage spells can't be partially resisted, don't know why Blizz isn't fixing it --Stipa 13:08, 28 December 2006 (EST)

That's intentional ;)  - CJ talk / cont  02:49, 4 January 2007 (EST)
To expand on CJ's comment, yes, certain Frost spells can be partially resisted (Blizzard), or, as I suspect, Ice Lance. Frost spells with snares cannot be partially resisted, however.--Sky 00:40, 19 January 2007 (EST)
To expand on Sky's comment, it's not only frost spells that act as such, but any spell that is not "Direct Damage only" that acts like this (Mind Flay comes to mind for me, a shadow spell that does damage and has a snare component). --Sunami 08:08, 30 June 2007 (EST)

Ok, the above is wrong, I'm working on it. --Sabelaide 17:22, 3 September 2006

I've moved this from the main page to the discussion page, as I find it not appropriate for the main page. It refers to resistance stacking. --bfx 06:58, 2 March 2007 (EST)

Clean Up Recommendations Edit

This page contains to much information, much of it duplicated from School and Resistance equipment. Formulas:Magical_resistance contains better information regarding formulae too. "Resistance" is a very inclusive term, but there's currently too much information for one page. -- Tyrsenus t c 22:47, 17 April 2007 (EDT)

Anyone watching this page? I'm gonna start a cleanup on this page and related ones eventually. --Piu (?!) 03:27, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Just moved all the equipment to better sorted pages, fixed the templates, next for those pages is the need to add new armor and properly fit them all into tables.  - CJ talk / cont  08:41, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Formulas:Magical resistance contains a lot more information that should be incorporated here. It's probably better to have one comprehensive article on this one game mechanic, similar to how spell hit rating is set up now. --Piu (?!) 02:13, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Resistance notesEdit

The following was added to the article by User:Galzohar in this edit [1]. I'm moving it to the talk page here as part of a cleanup of the article. --Piu (?!) 21:10, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

This is the widely accepted conception of how resistances work, and "agrees" with the official blizzard page explaining resistances, but expands the explanation to the more general rule:

At level 60 each 4 resist gives 1% damage reduction up to 300 resistance which gives 75% damage reduction, which is the cap. Against level 63 mobs it's 315 for 75% (4.2 per 1%). On binary spell that % is translated directly into a chance to completely resist the spell. On non-binary spells, that % is translated to chance to resist 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the damage, in a way that will on average give you damage reduction equal to the % I mentioned above.

In contrary to common belief, the more resistance the stronger you will be in encounters that are resistance-based. Going up from 255 to 315 (just 60 resist) will change it from taking 41.3% damage to taking 25% damage - that's 37% less damage compared to what you'd take with 255, or in other words, that 60 extra resistance will make you live 57% longer! Going from 0 to 105 resistance will just give you a 25% resistance, meaning living 33% longer.

Generally non-crappy items that have resistance will increase your survivability % way more than the % of the DPS you'll be losing, especially if you already have good resistances. Living 50% longer means the healers can spend 50% more of their mana on the tanks, or your raid can handle it even if they're short on healers, while the % DPS lost is usually much lower.

I have some pretty good gear and I end up losing ~2 spell damage for each 1 resistance I gain, but I need more than 10 spell damage for 1% damage increase while you only need 4.2 resistance (less if you already have more than 0 resistance) to live 1% longer. Fights where this comes into effect is Ragnaros, Vaelastrasz, Firemaw, Viscidus, Princess Huhuran (not for casters though), the bug trio probably (if you do them the hard way). For Faerlina in Naxx it's debatable because the damage is kinda avoidable and the fight is timered. It's not the heavy damage you take on Ragnaros and Vael/Firemaw if your raid is good, but still more resists do make you require less healing at the end of the day which is why some guilds do it one way and some do another.

For Ragnaros I've lead several pugs and was simply unable to kill him if I just picked people up according to their gear, while I killed him with ease first attempt when I put up a 150 FR requirement for melee and 100 FR requirement for casters.

Racial Resist TableEdit

As of 3.0, races do not have passive resistiance, it is now a % chance for a binary resist. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mistiwaters (talkcontr).

Need partial resist tables updated Edit

After much testing, I'm confident that WotLK resistance is not acting the same as TBC or vanilla resistance - the percent chances for non-binary resists are no longer partitioned into 0%/25%/50%/75%/100%. I've tested at various resistance levels pre- and now post-patch 3.0.8, and I'm getting very clean numbers around multiples of 10% only (0% resisted, 10%, 20%, 30%, etc.). Practically, this only means that there's a reduction in RNG damage spikes (streaks of 0% resistance), but it'd be nice to get these tables updated anyway. Anyone have a source of information on this? WikiPhazz (talk) 11:04, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

You are correct that the TBC resistance values no longer apply. Most of the data on this page is outdated, and now there is no longer a resistance cap (though it suffers from diminishing returns). Elitist Jerks have a nice article on the matter here:
Unfortunately my head exploded while trying to understand the math. Sphinxer (talk) 13:22, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Merge Edit

I really think Resist could probably just be a redirect to Resistance and incorporate the information there. Just Alerting You Small Howbizr(t·c) 2:27 PM, 14 Jun 2009 (EDT)

TBC changes Edit

I totally agree that in Wrath the resistance mechanics has changed from a cap like mechanic to a demising return mechanic. EJ has also proved this to be a fact. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Koffiebeker (talkcontr).

Really! I didn't realize that. Do you have any EJ links to save me from doing the research twice?

If it's outdated... Edit

Do you have any research you can recommend to fix it? Just Alerting You Small Howbizr(t·c) 1:57 PM, 7 Aug 2009 (EDT) - already linked above. If I had time I might even do something about this, but I don't. --Mikk (T) 18:20, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
My bad. I didn't realize some of those comments were fairly recent. I may or may not be able to work on this. Just Alerting You Small Howbizr(t·c) 3:08 PM, 7 Aug 2009 (EDT)
