Origin of the term Edit

What is the origin of the term ninja? Could someone add that to the text of the article? Schmidt 19:55, 4 April 2006 (EDT)

A little checking of Wikipedia brought up this at Ninja:

The word ninja is also used colloquially in multiplayer online role-playing games's (MMORPG) to describe a player who unfairly takes items from the corpses of dead enemies without allowing other players a chance to take the equipment. These "ninja looters" loot items swiftly and with minimal attention being drawn to themselves (hence the name) and are generally shunned by other characters for their nefarious deeds.

Curious that the MMORPG page has no mention of ninja looters. I guess it hasn't been as big an issue as some other forms of cheating/abuse. --Stfrn 20:51, 4 April 2006 (EDT)
Cheating/Abuse is covered under specific policy, I imagine that Ninja Looting, is chalked up to either PUGs or one time affairs, but taken on a whole create a bad experience for the player. --MikHaven (talk) 01:40, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I can't prove it but my wife, son, and daughter believe that I actually coined the term (although I doubt it and my memory is fuzzy on the issue). What I know for sure is I began using it to describe my son's actions in Everquest in 2002. It absolutely predates WoW and is not even logical for it to derive from WoW. EQ's looting system was a basic FFA (free for all), with no formal RNG rolling procedures. There were not as many BoP items so players would link the loot and perform manual /random100 rolls.

My son would loot items while the group was still in combat. The only way we would know is that we would see/hear the (automatic) coin split. Thus I began saying, "Stop being a ninja!", and "he is ninja-looting again". We would joke about how sneaky he was when he looted. EQ (at least back then) pretty much required nearly full groups to get anything accomplished. Our family and guild easily interacted with hundreds if not thousands of players over the course of our years playing the game. It is entirely feasible that it began as my family contends. It is also feasible that I heard it and repeated it. Either way it was around as of 2002. - Xanothos - level 70, Human Warrior - Stromm (becamce Luclin)

Mob Tapping Edit

Can't you retap a mob if you out damage the first tapper and the first tapper hasn't done anything for 60 seconds? --Hobinheim 13:49, 20 December 2006 (EST)

No. The only way you can "Retap" a mob, as I found out the other day is for the original tapper to run out of range. The otherday someone was running from a raptor in the barrens. It was grey to me but I shot it anyway... About 15 seconds later, the name turned red and I got the loot. --Bomyne 16:26, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

The link at the bottom of the page for, when clicked is saying the account has been suspended, ie: the site is no longer hosted on those servers. CrimsonTiger 20:10, 29 April 2007 (EDT)

List of Ninja Looters Edit

With the suspension of, there are not very many sources for monitoring ninja looters. Would it be feasible to create pages such as "List of Ninja Looters: <Server>"? I would be happy to keep an updated list for the servers I play on. I monitor the official forums anyway. Another bit of information relevant would be guilds' history of dealing with ninja looters.
