Hi, let me know how I can improve this page, and my WowWiki writing in general.
You should add that Windows Vista users should locate their add-ons in C:\users\public\games\World of Warcraft\Interface rather than the default path, due to Vista's administrator permissions. Other than that, a nice start! Devillocks (talk) 18:29, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
As someone new to all this I can't say for sure what the issue is but, this just does not work. I created each file as you stated by copying and pasting the code and when I load the game I check that HelloWorld is enabled as an addon and is NOT out of date. When I load a character, nothing. Not a thing happens related to the addon.
I find this page to be written for the incorrect audience. The voice of the writting is distracting from the technical information it attempts to deliver. As an addition to the raw information provided on the TOC format page I believe it a necessary and useful page. It should, however, be far more concise and would benefit from improved formating. I write this as someone who came to this page looking to learn the material and bemoaned sifting through the prose. Since the edit history is minimal I decided to attempt to bring this up for discussion. If no discussion occurs and the mood strikes me, I will eventually /cast eviserate and produce a new revision of the full document.
doesn't work Edit
We all have a writing style, some just easier to read than others. Keep up the work and it will all smooth over in time. You may want to make another attempt at writing this from scratch but with similar set up. Overall, not bad.
This introduction does work from the stand point of doing exactly what the author wanted. The exact output of this addon is to prove that you can make the 3 listed files, and through those files have text show up in your chatbox; as if you had typed the /script manually while in game. To prove that this works, log into the world and check the top of your chat box. You may need to scroll up. You will see
in white letters. If for some reason this does not show up, check to make sure each have been checked.
-Use Notepad if nothing else to create each file (not WordPad as it will save any file as an extension of .txt, even though you manually typed .loc, etc) -Check the type of each file in your directory(a.k.a. addon folder) to make sure each are listed as LUA, TOC, XML File, (not .txt, .txt, .txt) -Check in-game Addon tab to see if the addon is compatible. If it is not, may sure your Interface version is 40000 or higher in the .TOC file. Don't use a comma in the version number to make it easier to read (e.g. 40,000) -- Error (Incompatible) -Also, make sure you have a colon after interface (## Interface: 40000 -- I made this mistake and took an hour trying to find out why
- Interface 40000
wasn't incompatible. DON'T FORGET THE COLON (:).
