Dune

The "Fumping" Quest chain in Terrokkar is a reference to the movie/Book Dune. The Fumper, is a rename of the "thumper" and the final quest rewards reference the three main characters. The final giant worm is Hai'shulud, a mishmash of Shai-Halud, the name used for the worms as well.

BE Female dance

I just made an account to say that i dont see how the blood elf female dance is in any way related to Britany Spears' Toxicvideo because that video barely has any choreography to begin with. I can see more resembalance between it and some michael jackson moves (mainly the thriller 'claws' gesture and the rolling of the invisible hat onto his/her head). The twirling seems to allude to a japanese cartoon which I've forgotten the name of, but either way there is nothing that relates between that dance and that from Toxic

That doesn't prove anything, because it's not something from Britney Spears' videos; it's just using the song. Spears never used this dance. If you don't believe me, find an actual video where she does. The dance was from a music video for a game called Yogurting, that I linked in the article, that predated The Burning Crusade. What about Gunny in Honor Hold keep? He is an obvious refernce to R. Lee. "Gunny" Ermy. His dialogue is based on his drill sergeant mannerisms in Full Metal Jacket, and on his show, Mail Call.

Unstoppable Force / Immovable Object

These may also be a (albeit muffed) reference to WrestleMania III, whose main event pitted Hulk Hogan against André the Giant and was billed as "The Irresistable Force Meets the Immovable Object" or something similar.

Gadgetzan = Gagazet?

I've been working on a website recently that has all the random small details and easter eggs i've noticed in my favorite movies/anime/video games, etc. and I couldn't help but noticed that Gadgetzan in the snowy region of Tanaris sounds a lot like Gagazet, the snowy mountain from Final Fantasy X. It appears to be a direct result of people not closing their comment tags properly, causing many things to not appear on the page, and later people, seeing them missing, adding them in elsewhere. In going through and doing some organization, I really came to realize just how incredibly bloated this article is. There's even a warning about the filesize of the article when you edit it. Lady Dena Kennedy

If you ask me, this is a rather dubious reference. Perhaps I'm missing something, not being a huge follower of the Dead Kennedys, but is there any significance to the reference other then the name "Kennedy?" Kennedy is a fairly common name, and I would think it's more likely a reference to the Kennedy clan of politicians then the DK's. WTF Kraftwerk?

How can we possibly say that Patchwerk's name comes from this (lousy) German band named Kraftwerk? They just meant to call him Patchwork and changed one letter so it appears slightly better, and by the way "werk" merely means "work" in German, so there's no actual reason to keep this comment here. Avenger's Shield

There's a paladin ability (protection spec) called [Avenger's Shield] which has the pally throw his shield at his enemies. I'm thinking this might be a reference to Captain America, who is known to do exactly that, and who is often affiliated with a superhero team called the Avengers. Battlestar Galactica Reference

The post under Literary Shakespeare is wrong, it lists the 4 bankers from Undercity as being references to Hamlet & Romeo & Juliette, however if you look they are actually referencing 1983's "Trading Places" where the 4 main characters are named Randolph, Mortimer, Ophelia & William. While the food connection might be sounding good, it is unlikely that anyone at Blizzard knows of this woman or even the magazine. Not to be sounding to relying on Google, but until you add "Working Mother" (58 results), she doesn't show up between the various other Katherine Lees (among them a recent internet celeb and the author of the words to the anthem "America the Beautiful", which didn't ring a bell at all until I read the lyrics. The Dark Crystal

I'm dumbfounded that no one has seen fit to add this here. The Arrakoa are an almost direct reference to the Skeksis from the film The Dark Crystal. They look like Skeksis, they move like Skeksis, and their chief base of operations is called "Skettis". Then there's the "Darkstone" (Dark Crystal?) in Veil Skith. How much more obvious could it be? Several other pages regarding Skettis and the Arrakoa on this Wiki already make reference to the highly likely inspiration by Jim Henson's avio-reptilian villians. Cleaning Up

This article is in desperate need of cleaning up. Major problems include unsourced references that often have already been debunked on the articles themselves (and even references being debunked on this very page) and the same reference appearing in many different places. There are also occasional spelling errors and even references without explanation of why they are references. It’s quite horrible, actually. The Big Lebowski?

In the section on movies, close to the top, there's a thing under The Big Lebowski saying that the quest "Out of My Element" is a "direct reference" to something in the movie. Being out of your element is just a way of saying that you're not comfortable with the situation. I vote for removing it, and if someone doesn't respond to this in a week, I will. 'This is a direct reference to the character named Donny (played by Steve Buscemi) in The Big Lebowski. Several times in one of the major scenes, Walter Sobchak (played by John Goodman) tells Donny "You're out of your element!"'
How does that not underline that the NPC Donny and his quest are a reference to the character Donny and a phrase from the movie that is associated with him? Formatting and Splitting

I know there's been some discussion over splitting the pages and was wondering about whether anything had been decided on it. If so, can we go ahead and do it? Also, there's something to be said for editing all the entries so that they don't all read "this an obvious reference" or "this obviously references" and things like that, especially since A. many of these are not obvious references, and B. it gets annoying reading down the page when you have to read each one of those. Formatting and splitting, take two

No, not going to give over the splitting thing. However, allow me to suggest this: as each individual section is already large enough for the wiki software to whine about it, I suggest we split the page into

• Popular culture references in Wrath of the Lich King
• Popular culture references in Burning Crusade
• Popular culture references in World of Warcraft

Each of these should be constructed to be transcluded into the current page. Thus, the current page remains intact, but the individual sections are more readily edited. Least disturbance to achieve the goal. But, what would this do to <ref> instances?

As for format:

• Games, Film and Television is most commonly known by the name of the piece. I have no objection to indexing them by name. I entered this debate seeing part of the Literature sections organized by author, part by work. I think Author is the more sane method to index it. Many authors have several works referenced to them.
• By expansion, or by media? - I think we'd be a whole lot better off if we organized the page by "what was referenced" over "which expansion it was referenced in". There are a lot of cases where more than one expansion referred to the same film, or the same author's work. In that case, I would recommend a split along the lines of "Popular cultural references in Literature" etc. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 18:41, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

I've thought about this as well. I think the current arrangement with large sections per expansion was maybe more convenient as it was being created, but is not all that useful. Series?

People still just search for the first occurrence of "movie/book/band" and then click the next [edit] link to add stuff that's missing in their opinion, mostly pre-WotLK stuff to the WotLK section. The point is getting people to realize that this is sectioned by expansion. Once you know that, you can easily go to the subpages (we might even link them somewhere) so that one can add the appropriate stuff in the appropriate place. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 11:50, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

The section edit links can't be selectively disabled without changing == Section Name == to something that will look the same; however, then that section will no longer be listed on the page's TOC. __NOSECTIONEDIT__ can be added to disable them all. Well there aren't any other other important sections that need the edit links, or maybe it would work to put a <includeonly>__NOSECTIONEDIT__</includeonly> on the subpages. Anyway, I suggest this to be applied somehow, I support any solution that disencourages unexperienced users to just edit a single paragraph without taking a look at the "bigger picture". That, or the already often suggested removal of the sectioning altogether. Achievements for pre-WotLK content, and "soon" Cataclysm changes to Classic content make it difficult to categorize them properly. Ultimately, I'm just discontent with the many duplicates on this page, especially the recent (subjective) flood of "new" entries, and would welcome any improvement. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 09:08, April 6, 2010 (UTC)

Mobile Suit Gundam 00?

The Ascended Windwalker in Grim Batol has an ability called Windwalk, where the Ascended Windwalker suddenly blazes around irregularly in a blur while slashing at Players, leaving a series of after-images in its wake. This is very similar, especially visually, to the given abilities of the TRANS-AM System used by numerous Mobile Suits in said anime series.

While "moving as swift as the wind" is a common theme in eastern media in general, I don't think that's the origin the idea. I can't say often enough that while copying/adapting previous elements, settings and characters is used heavily in modern media, to the point of making exactly that the central point of the product, it's used even more often in Manga/Anime. Nearly all fantasy settings are mash-ups of multiple legends from all over the world, and I wouldn't be surprised if that held true for the SF subgenre as well. ~ Nathanyel (talk) 12:18, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Xenogears

Okay, I'm going to put this here because I refuse to be dragged into an edit war. The Xenogears reference keeps getting reverted, presumably by someone who's never played the game. Fleet Master Seahorn's line during the Protectors of Hyjal quest is a clear Xenogears reference. Hell, last time I played the game was about 10 years ago, and I *still* recognized it as a Xenogears reference (although I was little fuzzy as to which character said it at first). The fact that's it being reverted because Xenogears is somehow "obscure" (LOL WAT) or that "man of the sea" is another name for a sailor is beyond silly. Fleet Master Seahorn says the line IN THE SAME FASHION as the Captain of the Thames! See here. Wowhead has also picked up on the Xenogears reference. StarNeptune (talk) 07:46, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Fine, for the general similarity, re-add it if you want, but please with a "may". I read Seahorn's line as "I am a tauren, but I am also a man of the sea. I am a tauren of the sea!"
