Old Heroes category

Mikk, I wondered whether you could help me out with a quick thing? Was browsing around, in the Things to do category, and came across the Old Heroes category, which has been suggested to be moved to Category:Warcraft III hero units, do you think I should go ahead and create the category (or Category:Warcraft III/Hero Units category) then move everything from Category:Old Heroes to the new category? Or do I have to wait for permission from admins, or wait for one to do it? Thanks in advance. --Bull3t 14:24, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

There's very few things that you need admin "permission" for. As for how to go about doing stuff, there's two viewpoints: BE BOLD, and revert if you have to, or to vote first. When talking about large-scale changes (ones that aren't easily reverted by just going back in history in one or two articles), it's my personal viewpoint that it might be best to have some concensus first. Nope, admins can move pages the same as users. As for categories... they can't be easily moved. You have to recategorize all the pages manually. (Or with a wikibot script) --Mikk (T) 13:11, 19 October 2006 (EDT)

Yeah I had to try restoring the original to see wtf was happening. I assumed it was the size screwing the wiki engine over with its internal resizing and stuff. Automatic "Do not place content here" pages

Mikk;

Since your name pops up enough, I thought I'd fly this by you... But first: I'm relatively new to wiki's, though I've used this one plenty for UI and game reference...it's great (although I still won't use wiki's that are subject to contributors with an agenda...great concept, but too corruptible by those with ill intent).

But back to my original thought. When something (like a wiki) is created by many individuals with widely differing skills and knowledge, organization is bound to be spotty at times, even with the help pages, rules, policies, etc.

So: why not populate "bad pages" as read-only links to the proper ones to minimize merge/move/delete operations for the wiki maintenance team? I'm not sure how a wiki is generated, but the obvious method would be to have a page look-up list that would generate the "don't post here, use <link>" link on the fly. Individual pages would work too, but making a page to prevent the making of a page seems ... inefficient, lol.

I think this would really cut down on the amount of improperly placed content, as well as leading contributors or browsers to the correct pages with minimal confusion.

How do you mean? We do lots of redirects (e.g. Dragons is a redirect to Dragon). Anyone can create these on the fly. Just browse to a page that you want to create as a redirect and type "#redirect [[Destination page name]]" and tadaa :-)

Hmmm, I suppose lots of redirects get the job done - was just proposing a 'list' implementation rather than an individual page implementation (i.e. if someone wanted to make a /ChestArmor page, and it was on the 'list', then it COULDN'T be made, and they would be redirected to the correct page, then again, if making the page redirection is as easy as making the list...nvm ; p). It was just an idea to cut down on misplaced pages...could also be used for misspelled pages too. Is there a bot that automatically scans new pages like /Armour, or are all new pages reviewed manually?

For ambiguous content, the link could be to a disambiguation page... speaking of which...why can't we just call them clarification pages-aren't new words for words that already exist the *opposite* of clarity. Yes, it's a cute word, but any word that interrupts the smooth flow of thought without *improving* the thought is a word that should be { {deprecated} } (imnsho ; p)

Blizzard was supposed to make non-vendor trash items white, but Thottbot and Allakhazam show

Staring area guide?

Oh, hum, my bad. Should have explained better. I was thinking of a rundown of some of the more annoying level 10--30ish zones, where you keep running back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, to hand in quests and whatnot. Do it in the wrong order, and you spend more time running than actually questing. The worst candidate I can think of is Duskwood, but Ashenvale (both horde & alliance) certainly qualifies also. I guess Barrens and Stonetalon fall into this category also.

I was thinking something along the lines of "Pick up quest 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Head west and do all those. Get back and hand in. Now pick up 6 and 7 and head east." And "Before heading to zone X, remember to finish prequest 8 in zone Y and bring the next step along".

Quick questions?

Small request

Is there an icon for "Recipe" ?

Ummmm... I don't think there's a unified "recipe" picture anywhere, really. Other than perhaps the icon used in-game when you have a recipe item in your inventory. But I'm not even sure that's the same across all recipes / tradeskills.

RFC: Item tooltip transclusion

Hey Mikk, I've been having some fun with templates and items, I'd like your approval to slip this into Help:Item articles...

Basically what I've done is tweaked the start of the table used to make the tooltip, and added some <noinclude> blocks so that transcluded item pages will embed a tooltip into other pages. The neat majick is it all comes from the same table, so any time the item page tooltip is changed, everything that includes it will change too! For example, {{:Wasteland Stitched Leggings}} results in:

The Scale Leggings of the Skirmisher are mail leggings with useful stats for hunters and melee shaman.

They drop from Watchkeeper Gargolmar in the Hellfire Ramparts in Hellfire Citadel.

Sweet isn't it? The changes are minor, so existing pages can be easily tweaked to transclude as needed. If you'd like another example, check out Watchkeeper Gargolmar. I've not added pages for all the items, but I'm sure you can see where I'm headed.

{{rare}} links to Rare, whereas {{lrare}} links to the actual item. I need the link to the actual item when the page is transcluded, for example the tooltip above needs to link to Wasteland Stitched Leggings, not Rare. This just has the added bonus of properly coloring the tooltip title line in the actual page too.

I like how it can be used anywhere and how it sizes differently depending on where it's used. However, I'm a bit worried that Joe Wiki Editor will get very confused about how the item pages need to be designed with the noincludes and whatnot. A seperate page for the tooltip could work just as well, but I think it's kinda redundant. The noinclude blocks really aren't any more complex than a <tt></tt> block or the like... everything that's not the tooltip goes inside a noinclude block. There only needs to be two blocks at most, before the tooltip and after. Otherwise, it's just a copy-paste job from the boilerplate. If Joe wiki editor isn't comfortable with it then maybe he shouldn't be trying to conver the existing pages? Maybe I'm just a jerk... --Tekkub 00:47, 11 November 2006 (EST)

There's always going to be exceptions :) The other thing to remember is that it's really not going to matter unless someone is trying to embed a tooltip in another page. If they are doing that, it's kindof implied that they know how to fix the embedded page if there's a problem with it. PNG thumbs

Heya Mikk. Was wondering if there was any known fix on wikimedia to the PNG Thumbnail bug, making the use of thumbs impossible without making the png unreadable. , not to be a nitpick (cough), but this image seems a bit off. the pen / feather looks like it has a yellow bleed to the bottom of it, instead of a feather / pen which it is. just looks a bit odd. Do we have any alternatives for it? like, a torn page perhaps?

Wow model viewer

I saw Image:Bull3t-char.png and think its AMAZING. I have a few questions for you regarding Wow Model Viewer and your picture. Certain Items/spells make my whole computer freeze when trying to veiw them on a char. Such as The Unstopable Force. Any idea on why only a selet bunch of items do this? Aeurhmm well the "problem" with WoWModelView is it's arguablly against TOS and totally unsupported. I even think development on it stopped. I'll guess that the problem is how it uses DirectX and that your graphics card hates it. Try updating your drivers and DirectX. Or try going into the "Options" menu and disabling stuff there (Anti-Alias, Env Map, HW Acceleration) until it works. (or not..)

Now, as for that image. Good luck getting WoWModelView to do that for you. That's the single most touched-up image I've done. It's a composite of several screenshots with some added-in components done by me, and then LOTS of shading work. See http://mikk.cjb.net/gfx/bull3t/ for the originals I've worked with. Compare e.g. "face.png" vs "face-work.jpg" to see some of the detail work that went into it.

Calling specific part of a page name

Heya Mikk. I've been testing around a fair bit with spell pages (See Category:Spells by ID) and I wanted at the start to have an automatic linking without using {{elinksspell}}. So using a template that would directly detect which spell is on the page and call the number on thottbot/allakhazam. I've been searching for the last hours a way to call the numbers of a page where the page is named 'Template:Spell:00000'. I seem to be able to get at best only Spell:00000 =/

Even if we had the parser functions I don't think it can be done. I don't know of any ways to "break up" a template parameter. Now if we were to move this stuff into a "Spell" namespace (this page is in the "User talk" namespace) then the page name would simply be the number (or the spell name for named pages)... but I don't know if they want to do that and it would require access to the server to set up I do believe. BTW Mikker, how's that coming? I have some CSS crap I want to play with but Mediawiki:Wowwiki.css doesn't seem to work as it should... Hmm, I haven't had that on wowwiki i don't think. Not that I follow all the logs 100%; i just check the output of the last operation once in a while. I've had it on other mediawikis running on top of lighttpd though (see http://www.gnegg.ch/archives/348-The-return-of-Except-100-continue.html) and was fixed by forcing in a blank "Expect:" header in Curl, but that shouldn't ever be an issue here since wowwiki runs on top of Apache.

Can you post a copy of the exact error message? 417 is kind of generic and doesn't really begin to tell me where the problem could be. --Mikk (T) 06:32, 5 April 2007 (EDT)

Yeah I had that and it works on my network here at work but blew at home. Unless they had some other problem last night. It is odd. I downloaded fiddler to see the HTTP requests to figure out which header was different. The thing that really blew me out of the water last night, on my home network, was that my code worked if I had fiddler up but didn't if I didn't.
Anyway, Adys asked me not to run the update I had coded for so I am going to write a new algorithm for the {{wwclub}} update. The N is much lower so there is less worry of my horking something for the admins. :)

I have full intention of reading all of the Policies and Guidelines, it just seemed almost jumbled when I tried to look through them, I thought I was looking at the main Policies and lo and behold, I found myself at the page to create a policy.. x.x That's not a good choice to start out at, haha. The problem with all bot checks is that they're only valid for when the bot last scanned the page though. How often should it re-scan? Checking for changes to the page in question isn't enough since, obviously, that's not the page getting changed. Mikk (T) 19:10, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Right, here goes something. I have no experience in T-shirt printing whatsoever though, so do feel free to get back to me if you/the printer thinks something needs adjusting -- like if they want it with a fixed background color and no alpha channel, etc.

I couldn't really get it 800x1000 given the logo's dimensions -- it ended up more like 800x800.

The "-noshadow" one is probably what you need to use for a black background shirt. The shadowed should work on a white one.

Handling disconnected players in ChatThrottleLib?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a standard way of handling players disconnecting in ChatThrottleLib.

I've got an addon (Guild2Guild) which is using ChatThrottleLib to send messages between multiple guild channels.

I'm running into problems when the person you are sending messages to disconnects - it complains that it can no longer find the user - because there are still messages in the queue for them.

I've written some code which I think will clear the queue for that user correctly and would like to add it to ChatThrottleLib, but I'm wondering if there might also be a better / more standard way to do this.

Here's the code I added (which works with ChatThrottleLib v 20.

Updated Script(s)?

I just wanted to ask if you're using an updated script (add-on) that's not on the page linked from the Global Functions page to pull the global functions from the game. It seems like I'm missing some entries in my list. Or is it capped at a certain amount or something? I just want a list of them *all*. :)

Well the script filters by function address to be sure to avoid FrameXML-defined functions. Sometimes they move function groups around so you need to add new address spans to the filter - it's the code.

Edit: Actually, I decided it's easier to adjust the Global Scanner add-on to pick up everything and then use the Lua script + stand-alone to filter out the Frame XML stuff. Works MUCH better. Thank you for the scripts, by the way. :)

I've never done that. User:Flickering did that back in the day and after that Blizzard have been better at telling us about changes.
