The Shadows & Light is a source book for the Warcraft RPG and was published in 2004.

The book is out of print. However it can still be obtained in PDF format from Drive Thru RPG.

Much of the lore in the book appears to be written by an unknown historian or historians on Azeroth. This implied by refrences throughout the book to the beliefs of other historians and scholars, including Khadgar. It refers to these individuals; beliefs, opinions, and rumors covering a variety of topics in the world of Azeroth.Template:Cite

Short Stories

Short stories found in Shadows & Light.

  • Trant's tale; Trant journeys with his companions, Haneth, Vlac, Nuji Kodosbreath, Dolmont to outland through a portal from Azeroth, fight a few nether drakes and a netherwyrm before deciding to open another portal to escape into Dustwallow Marsh.
  • Guzul'dar & Stefon's Tale; Guzul'dar & Stefon meet up with the high elven tinker Lenaeas, a companion of theirs, to work on a device they hoped would hopefully destroy the Maelstrom and bring Azshara's undersea kingdom to the surface (specifically more of Suramar). They planned to take the device to Maelstrom using a commandeered goblin zepplin with the help of their other companion, a dwarven pilot named Tagradin.
  • Akinos Steelclaw's Tale; Akinos Steelclaw travels to Stormwind as a diplomat from the Horde in order improve diplomatic relations. While in the Valley of Heroes, he gets into a debate with members of the Stormwind City Guard, including the nephew of Danath Trollbane, Christof Dungalion. They debated over who and what truly makes a hero. They discuss the human heroes of the Second War, and those that traveled to Draenor. Akinos remembers attrocities commited to his people by each of the "so-called" heroes, but instead he chooses to weaken the guard's arguements in a diplomatic way, by pointing out they love their own people. This leads one of the guards into pointing out that the valley contains statues from other races including dwarves and elves, and he added that perhaps someday an orc will be put into the Valley. Akinos however adds, that his warchief Thrall belongs there, as does Jaina Proudmoore, and even Cairne Bloodhoof. One of the guards disgusted by idea of a Tauren being honored in that way, chooses to insult Akinos, by saying he would be "lucky if there is "room for one race of beasts, let alone two". However Akinos deflects the remark away by asking who should be honored if the Valley could contain only one hero. The guards argued over if it should be Uther Lightbringer or Lord Anduin Lothar. However, Akinos having them where he wanted them, decided to bring up his own choice, Orgrim Doomhammer, "warrior and warchief, the shadow no prison could hold." At that moment Akinos knew that if the Stormwind Council could be toyed with as easily as he had with the guards then his position as diplomat would be an enjoyable post.
  • Aviana's Tale; The story covers Aviana's experiences during the War of the Ancients, during the battle in Suramar, as she watched fellow Ancients die or be held back by the Burning Legion's forces. She stops to talk to Cenarius and tell him information of what was happening on the battlefield, while he prepared his attack on the Eternal Temple. Cenarius then sends her back to Elune to pass on his sorrow that the battle will end with so much death.
  • Leyan's Tale; Leyan a young guard of Nethergarde Keep, stands watch at the top of the Tower of Nethergarde, when Khadger appeared near him. They then discussed planar travel, and the worlds seperated by the Twisting Nether. Khadger opened a small portal looking into another place within the Nether. Khadgar then discussed how he may have have to cross the Twisting Nether someday, and would have to take others with him. They then left the tower.
  • Drann's Tale; Drann along with his companions, Captain Dumont, Stonehoof, Feulia, Makil, Renmar, and Talario, fight their way to an altar and cite a ritual that they hope will open treasure to them, but instead they end up releasing an angry fire elemental. They are then transported to the Firelands of the Elemental Plane, where they hope they can find a way back home.
