According to the Warcraft II manual, the Runestone at Caer Darrow was erected by high elf druids. Later sources refer to the runestones as being crafted by magi, which seems more fitting with the additional development of the high elven society in Warcraft III. Although, the definition of magi does not contradict a druidic source of magic, as their can be magi within druidism by real-world definition . Even Warcraft II manual made a connection to the "arcane" and "magiks" when discussing the Runestones created by the high elven "druids".

A Runestone in the Scorched Grove in Eversong Woods

Runestones are large blocks of rock carved with powerful runes of elven magic. They were placed by high elven druid magi to mark the boundaries of their new kingdom, Quel'Thalas, and to create a magical barrier that stopped the use of arcane magic from being sensed by the Burning Legion. [1]

In the Second War the great Runestone at Caer Darrow was captured by the orc warlock Gul'dan who used its potent magics to create the Altars of Storms, which in turn created the first ogre-magi.

Following Thrall's reformation of the Horde, many Altars were retooled by troll masons into structures capable of channeling shamanistic energies with the intent of reviving fallen heroes.

This article contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

According to the Warcraft II manual, the Runestone at Caer Darrow was erected by high elf druids. Later sources refer to the runestones as being crafted by magi[2], which seems more fitting with the additional development of the high elven society in Warcraft III. Although, the definition of magi does not contradict a druidic source of magic, as there can be magi within druidism by real-world definition [3][4]. Even Warcraft II manual made a connection to the "arcane" and "magiks" when discussing the Runestones created by the high elven "druids".

However, according to the Warcraft RPG, runic magic has some ties to druidic magicTemplate:Cite. Some half-elves (offspring of high elves) are even reported to have retained druidic magic passed down in their culture, becoming savagekinTemplate:Cite. It is said that high elven rangers that have become forsaken turn to the ways of dark rangers once finding out they can no longer use their powers of druidismTemplate:Cite. In Burning Crusade is a character who appears to be a "blood elf" druid in Tempest Keep. All of which implies that some high elves have dabbled in druidism.
