Roleplaying

Roleplaying Role Playing

Role Playing (RP) denotes playing the role of your character in the game in regard to behaviors and external communications (/say, /yell, etc. in Chat). This may include pretending to have a different set of abilities, morals, background, accent, etc. RP has a great attraction for some; however, some are able to take it or leave it, and others hate everything about the concept of RP.

It's never a big problem if you don't like RP, as long you stay out of the Roleplay flagged servers. Many players who choose an RP flagged server dislike it when non-RPers join or disrupt their playing environment. Some say that they are littering the Roleplaying in the Realm with their 'leet-speak' and other 'real life' types of speech. Many RPers enjoy immersing themselves in the game. If you decide to RP and someone upsets your playing experience, you can try reminding them of the roleplay policies and continue playing. Or, if they continue to infringe, you can choose to report them to Blizzard's GameMaster department by using the red question mark symbol. This makes the RP realms more fun for everyone!

Part of role playing can include creating a background or history of your character (see fan fiction) to base their behaviors and reactions on in-game. In World of Warcraft most role players like to integrate their character's history into the canon lore to further immerse them in the Warcraft universe.

RP also refers to RP Realms. There are several RP Servers available to Warcraft RPers. RP servers are functionally the same as PvE Servers (there are just a few RP-PvP servers), but carry stricter enforcement of the naming policy and there is an expectation that players will do their best to stay "in character" (IC), as opposed to "out of character" (OOC). See the official Role Playing Policy page. For more information on role playing in the World of Warcraft, please see the Roleplaying Compendium.

Examples of role playing:

  • As a Paladin, aid other players in need and speak respectfully at all times.
    • Alternatively, as an evil paladin, players can work to suppress those who oppose them with force.
  • As a Warlock, speak of the powers of darkness and seek mostly to increase your powers.
  • As a Warrior, don't shy from a fight and disparage the use of spells.
  • As a Rogue, be mysterious and dark. have a purpose or a story of why you are a rogue.

Examples of NOT role playing:

  • Using 1337-speak whenever possible, or talk about how much horsepower your car has, or how Chuck Norris could kill Onyxia.
  • Griefing other players.
  • Talking about real world events.
