Felguard

For lore on the felguard, see Felguard.

Felguards are summonable by Demonology warlocks. They receive Spell shadow summonfelguard [Summon Felguard] when choosing the Demonology talent specialization. The Felguard acts as a 'permanent' pet, unlike the Doomguard and Infernal. This minion, like the rest, will receive a random name that can be changed by visiting a Demon Trainer.

Abilities

As a warlock pet, the felguard possesses five abilities that help it excel in combat. Legion Strike is it's basic damage ability to help it cause damage in addition to its melee attack. Ability rogue sprint [Pursuit] helps with catching up to enemies. Ability warrior titansgrip [Axe Toss] is a long ranged, instant stun with a relatively short cooldown. Felstorm does very good damage, and generates decent AoE threat. Lastly, Avoidance helps mitigate incoming AoE damage.

Icon Spell Min Level Description
Ability Warlock Avoidance Avoidance (Passive) 10 Reduces the damage your summoned demon takes from non-player area of effect attacks by an additional 90%.
Inv axe 09 Legion Strike 10 A sweeping attack that does the Felguard's weapon damage plus ((($SP * 0.50) * 2) * 0.264 + X) divided among all targets within 6 yards, and also wounds the Felguard's current target reducing the effectiveness of any healing received by 25% for 6 sec.
Ability Rogue Sprint Pursuit 20 Charge an enemy, instantly causing weapon damage and increasing the Felguard's movement speed by 30% for 6 sec.
Ability warrior titansgrip Axe Toss 30 The Felguard hurls his axe, stunning the target for 4 sec.
Ability warrior bladestorm Felstorm 45 The Felguard recklessly swings its Axe, striking all nearby targets within 8 yards for its weapon damage plus X and continuing to perform the action every 1 sec for 6 sec. The Felguard cannot perform any other abilities during Felstorm.

Its Spell warlock demonicempowerment [Demonic Empowerment] effect is to break all stun, snare and movement impairing effects, making the Felguard immune to them for 15 sec.

Note

A special note should be given about the Felguard's mana pool. The Felguard's abilities are very mana intensive, and after several fights its mana can be drained completely and it will be unable to taunt or Cleave. Warlocks can help this by having the Spell shadow manafeed [Mana Feed] talent, which can offset the drain. Paladins grouping with a Warlock whose Felguard is constantly running low on mana might consider using Spell holy greaterblessingofkings [Blessing of Might].

The Felguard will use Cleave at every possible opportunity if allowed to do so, even if there is no second target to hit. If you are farming or playing solo PvE and facing single mobs at a time, turning it off auto-cast will greatly diminish his mana consumption and consequently your down time. This strategy also gives you control over when he uses this extra attack, that way he can deliver the extra damage when you need it and not whenever he feels like it.

Felguard Tips

The Felguard is highly useful for both soloing and group situations. When soloing, it is capable of superior aggro holding over the Voidwalker due to both a taunt and very high DPS. It does lack an AoE taunt though its Cleave can make up for this somewhat. It also lacks the voidwalker's self heal, which can mean increased downtime without extensive use of Health Funnel or First Aid. In group situations, it offers a hefty DPS increase, however its Cleave should be turned off to prevent breaking CC. It's a matter of personal preference and talent spec.

The exchange is that the Voidwalker has more armor (closer to 50% damage reduction, while the Felguard has 42% or so) and the Voidwalker has more health (moreso with Inv glyph majorwarlock [Glyph of Voidwalker]).

Felguard stats

Stats are taken with a Demonology Warlock with no gear equipped, but with Spell shadow shadowpact [Master Demonologist] and Ability warlock improveddemonictactics [Demonic Knowledge] active. Stats are base values without bonuses, pet damage is after Spell shadow shadowworddominate [Unholy Power].

Felguard trivia

The voiceovers for the Felguard were originally recorded by Blizzard for the Doomguard, a warlock summon that is hostile to the warlock until enslaved, and again once the enslave breaks. The voiceovers make more sense when this is taken into account, especially the spell cast voiceovers, where the Felguard appears to be threatening the Warlock with death repeatedly. This would also explain the quote "What happened to your friend?", as summoning a Doomguard used to kill a random party member.

Another explanation is that since the Felguard is a more powerful demon than the others, it might have resisted being dominated by the Warlock's will, and is being forced solely by 'physical' enslavement to serve his orders.

  • Voiceovers when summoned:
"Who dares summon me?!"
"You cannot command me."
"What happened to your friend?"
"Do not waste my time, lesser creature."
  • Voiceovers when given a command:
"A paltry task."
"Too pathetic to fight your own battles?"
"A welcome diversion."
"Your fate will be the same."
"Your time is running out."
"Enjoy this while you can."
"I will enjoy watching you die."
"You waste my time."
  • Voiceovers when dismissed:
"Do not call on me again."
"You live...for now."
"Summon me again at your peril."
"I'll be back."
  • Funny voiceover:
"I play all my records backwards, sdrawkcab sdrocer ym lla yalp I."
