- Generally, an acronym for "Role Playing plus Player vs Player".
- A type of Realm in World of Warcraft that combines the RP and PvP rulesets.
History
Originally, the World or Warcraft server choices were: Player vs Environment Role Playing (Player vs Environment) Player vs Player
And so it was till a large number of role-players voiced their desire for a role-playing server set up with a PvP rules. They felt the unrestrained ability to kill one another was more realistic. So in September 13, 2005, the first two RP-PvP servers were launched Maelstrom US and Emerald Dream US.
Ideally this would be the ultimate adrenaline rush fantasy. Players could spontaneously in-act the role of hero or villain without the bother of flagging and challenging. The world of Azeroth was smaller back then and the Dark Portal was exit only for demonic NPC's. Now the promise existed of a world forever free from the threat of extended boredom.
To this day, many players find themselves compellingly drawn to RP-PvP. Even many of the ones who get tired of all the ganking. If you come from a RP or PvE server, you quickly come to realize this world as much more hostile and irritating then you may have expected. This may come as oddly refreshing for those who were bored.
Difficulties
Unlike a normal RP server where you can play both Alliance and Horde, there is a complete in-game isolation of the factions. So RP based battles are a little harder to coordinate. Not to mention the social barrier for players. Just like any PvP server, you may never what your enemy was thinking.
It is not true that most RP-PvP'er don't RP. There is a less noticable focus on RP because, plain and simply, people are trying to kill you constantly. Many would agree that PvP'ers in general have a more competitive mind set. Another common misconception is that RP policies on RP-PvP realms are less strict than on normal RP realms, this is completely false. However, the enforcement of rules tends to vary server to server as it does on all types of servers. From my personal experience on Ravenholdt and Maelstrom I notice that how new a server is, and the numbers populating it, has an influence on response priorities by the Game Moderator. Whether matters are more or less strict depend entirely on what we do.
The most frequent difficulty on RP-PvP or normal RP servers comes from the expectations of would be role-players. There is a small percentage that has their own idea of the way RP should be, that don't feel there is enough RP, or maybe simply feel left out. This small percent often reacts by attempting to murder RP by constant whining in forums and trade chat that RP is dead.
