As priests are mana based spell-casters, their abilities vary greatly. This is dependent on choices of specialization and tree selection. For instance healers focus more on healing, protection, buffing and the removal of harmful buffs, wheres Shadow priests are experts in direct and damage over time, as well as indirect healing.

Codex abilities
A codex is an item that can teach a new or specific rank of a learned ability to a priest. Previously, these abilities used to be available only via codices; Patch 2.1.0 made them available via trainer as well. Patch 4.0.1 fully depreciated the codex system; they now appear as grey items with the note: "This item appears damaged by the elements and no longer readable."

Racial abilities
Prior to patch 3.0.2, priests got two additional spells according to their race, first at level 10 and then at level 20. In Wrath of the Lich King, the racial system was revamped, standardizing the racials across all classes. Many of the old Priest racials were removed, while others became spells available to all priest (ex. [Desperate Prayer]). The table below outlines the racials prior to Wrath of the Lich King.
