-The term "NPC"/"Non-Player Character", depending on the context, may have slightly variable meanings. Historically the term referred to characters in a role-playing game that were controlled by the Game Master (a.k.a Dungeon Master).
-Within the computing context, this definition becomes a bit stretched. Strictly speaking, it can cover any character which is computer-controlled. Typically though, it will be used to either refer to Neutral/Allied computer-controlled entities, or to computer-controlled entities with above-average levels of AI and/or interaction beyond just fighting.
-Within the [[World of Warcraft]], all of the vendors, guards, quest givers and other non-attackable mobs (excluding critters) in territories controlled by your faction would probably be considered NPCs.
