Rest is a device that allows more casual gamers to stay somewhat on par with other players, as to character level. It's also a clever device to encourage less-active players to keep their accounts, making players want to come back and play some more after some time away from the game. Rest also adds more value to the subscription fee. In light of the controversy of game addiction, rest also gives players reason to cease play. Blizzard has also stated that World of Warcraft play should be taken in moderation according to loading screen tips.

While in an inn or anywhere in a capital city, your player portrait will begin to glow and your level circle will say <span style="color: #999933;">zzz</span>, indicating that you are resting. If you log off here, you will continue to rest while offline.

Abilities
One bubble of rested XP (5% of a level) is earned for every 8 hours spent resting. A maximum of 30 bubbles (150% of a level) may be earned. In other words, you can leave your character resting in an inn or capital city for up to 10 days (without gaining experience) before you earn the maximum amount of rest state, and a resting character stores up one full level of rest in 160 hours (6.67 days).

It may also be possible to engage the resting state while in ghost form, or dead.

  +
The fight consists of two alternating phases which will change depending on your raids positioning.

Form 1: Fire Scorpion
Consuming rest
When rested, your XP bar will turn <span style="color:#6cc;">blue</span>, and a notch will appear indicating exactly how rested you are. You will earn double XP from killing monsters while rested until your XP bar fills to the notch. A rested character earns double combat XP until this rest state is consumed, at which point the message

:<span style="color:#ff33cc;">You feel normal.</span>

appears and you resume normal XP gains for kills.

NOTE: Your rested state marker-notch can go off the right side of your XP bar such that you won't see it until you gain at least one level.

  +
Form 2: Fire Cat
When you are rested, when you kill a monster, in the combat log it may say something like

:<span style="color:#3399ff;">120 XP (+60 rested XP).</span>

This means you received a total of 120 XP: 60 XP for killing the monster, and an extra 60 rested XP.

  +
Each of the forms has a unique set of abilities, and these abilities become more powerful each time he switches forms. He casts these abilities when he reaches 100 energy, and regenerates energy more quickly the longer he is in a single form.
A note on consuming rested XP: Imagine the script above showed you had 5000 rested XP. Then, you earn 120 XP for killing a mob (60 kill XP, 60 rested XP). You would now have 5000 - 120 (4880) rested XP left, not 5000 - 60 (4940). The extra XP that you got "(+60 rested XP)" was not the only XP pulled from your rested XP pool.

  +
It is recommended that you pull him with your raid stacked up, forcing him into Scorpion form. It's base ability is Flame Scythe, a frontal cleave attack that splits the damage done amongst all targets hit. Fandral will only remain in this form as long as enough players are stacked in front of him. Any place works for stacking, but the middle of the circle on the platform is recommended as it works well as a range indicator for the Cat phase.
Non-combat experience such as exploration and quest experience does not consume rest state. The rest marker will be moved forward by as many XP as you gain from the exploration or quest. Also if you're using the Recruit-A-Friend function, the rest marker will be pushed forward and your rested XP will not be consumed.

  +
If the raid spreads out, Staghelm will transition into Cat form instead. When he reaches 100 energy in this form, he will cast Leaping Flames, jumping at a random ranged party member and leaving a pool of fire 20 yards across under them. He will also spawn a copy of himself called a Spirit of Flame when he leaps. The melee should immediately kill these spirits as soon as they spawn.
Further information
When you are about 5th or 6th level, you will receive quests to go to another town area. This town is where the first inn is available to a new character. Put another way, until you get your first 5 or 6 levels out of the way you will not happen across an inn and so you will have to 'camp out' when you logout, accumulating rest at the slower "wilderness" rate. It is easy enough to get these first five levels, so it is good to finish those quests and hurry over to the inn.

  +
The goal in this encounter is to leave him in a single form as long as possible, until his energy regeneration simply becomes too high from his Adrenaline stacks for your raid to handle any more, then cluster up or spread out to force Staghelm to change forms. The soft-enrage for this fight comes from the fact that every time he changes form, his Flame Scythe and Leaping Flames will hit harder due to his Fury stacks.
At this inn, and at all other inns that you find, you will find an innkeeper, who can bind your hearthstone to that inn. Activating your hearthstone you will move your character to that bound inn. This is useful for rapid or unexpected logout situations; you can activate your hearthstone and log out at the inn, gaining rest.

  +
Here is a short summary of the time it takes his energy to go from 0 to 100 based on Adrenaline stacks:
Since rest XP is based on percentage, higher level characters will receive higher absolute rest xp. So the higher your level, the better rest is for you.

Remember, the number of Scythes your raid can take is not a fixed number. You'll need to figure out your healers' limits, and that limit will go down every Scorpion phase as Fandral gains Fury stacks. It is also important to make sure each phase last as long as possible, as the phases get harder and therefore must be shorter as the fight goes on. After the last Flame-Scythe, you want to spread out as fast as possible, use blink, Stampeding roar, disengage and therelikes, to make the switch as smoothly as possible.
As of patch 3.0.9, there is a glitch in the inn's bonus rest while logged out in that after you hearthstone to an inn, you have to leave the inn and re-enter before your character's icon indicates resting by glowing. It isn't immediately apparent because you don't receive the "20 seconds until logout" that you would in the wilderness. This doesn't seem to be a problem when hearthstoning to an inn within a major city.

  +
If you choose to tank the Scorpion in the middle of the circle, your ranged dps and healers will want to spread on or just outside the runic circle during the Cat phase. Leaping Flame will target ranged raiders based on their spec role, not based on how many are at range. All ranged dps and all healers are eligible targets, regardless of how close they are to Fandral.
World of Warcraft Beta
In the beta version of the original game, rest did not exist and experience was designed to prevent players from playing more than few hours in a row. Experience gained was divided by 50% after few hours. However, beta-testers did not like it and rest was implemented, giving instead 200% of experience for few hours, which Blizzard's developers later reported as being the "same numbers seen from the opposite point of view".

  +
Most raids can start out with 5-7 Scythes and 6-8 Leaps before transitioning, reducing as the fight goes one. Number of Scythes during the seed phase will need be reduced, as the damage from each will be higher due to the reduced number of people soaking each as people run out for the explosion.

Shifting to Scorpion:
  +
*Searing Seeds - Each players (excluding the tank) will get a debuff with a random duration from 10 to 55 seconds. When it expires or the character dies, an AoE will explode at the character's location. Your raid members need to watch their debuff timer and move out of the group ~5 seconds before Searing Seeds expires. Once 12 yards from the rest of the players, wait for the AoE to trigger, then move back to the raid ASAP to help soak the Scythes.
  +
  +
Shifting to Cat:
  +
*Burning Orbs - Staghelm will spawn 2(10-man)/5(25-man) large orbs in random locations outside the central circle. These orbs work identically to the crystals on Bael'roc, and as you will have already defeated Bael'roc, this should be a relatively easy mechanic to understand. The only difference is that you don't need to stand close by, they will pick their closest target, no matter how far away you are. In addition, the debuff from the orbs does not disappear when you stop 'tanking' it, instead lasting approximately 8 seconds, dealing damage each second for the duration. This damage plus a flame pool will quickly kill most raid members, so a quick reaction speed is a must.

Ragnaros' latest chief lieutenant stands before the door to his master's chamber in Sulfuron Keep. Majordomo Staghelm's treasonous efforts will all come to a head before the very seat of his new master.[1]

Majordomo Staghelm <Archdruid of the Flame> (formerly Archdruid Fandral Staghelm of Darnassus) is the penultimate boss of the Firelands.

The loss of his son, Valstann, in the War of the Shifting Sands utterly shattered Fandral's spirit. Now empowered by Ragnaros as the new Majordomo of the Firelands (replacing the deceased Majordomo Executus) and the leader of the treacherous Druids of the Flame, Fandral seeks to bring ruin to Azeroth rather than live in a world without his beloved child.[2]

      • Inv elemental primal fire Searing Seeds — Searing Seeds implants fiery seeds in Fandral's enemies. Each seed grows at a different rate. When fully grown, the seeds explode, inflicting 60000 Fire damage to players within 12 yards.
      • Spell mage flameorb Burning Orbs — Fandral summons several orbs around the room. Each orb attacks the nearest player, burning them for 5000 Fire damage every 2 sec. This effect stacks. On heroic mode it's 9000 Fire damage.

Strategy

Stub The fight consists of two alternating phases which will change depending on your raids positioning.

Form 1: Fire Scorpion

Form 2: Fire Cat

Each of the forms has a unique set of abilities, and these abilities become more powerful each time he switches forms. He casts these abilities when he reaches 100 energy, and regenerates energy more quickly the longer he is in a single form.

Here is a short summary of the time it takes his energy to go from 0 to 100 based on Adrenaline stacks:

   0 Adrenaline stacks: 18 seconds;
   1 Adrenaline stack: 15 seconds;
   2 Adrenaline stacks: 12 seconds;
   3 Adrenaline stacks: 11 seconds;
   4 Adrenaline stacks: 10 seconds;
   5 Adrenaline stacks: 9 seconds;
   6 Adrenaline stacks: 8 seconds;
   7 Adrenaline stacks: 7 seconds.
   8 ...

Most raids can start out with 5-7 Scythes and 6-8 Leaps before transitioning, reducing as the fight goes one. Number of Scythes during the seed phase will need be reduced, as the damage from each will be higher due to the reduced number of people soaking each as people run out for the explosion.

Every third shape-change (including his initial change into form when he enters combat), he'll briefly stun the raid and cast either Searing Seeds or Burning Orbs, depending on which form he is swapping into.

Shifting to Scorpion:

  • Searing Seeds - Each players (excluding the tank) will get a debuff with a random duration from 10 to 55 seconds.

Shifting to Cat:

  • Burning Orbs - Staghelm will spawn 2(10-man)/5(25-man) large orbs in random locations outside the central circle.
