Forums: Village pump → Update to Companion page

Updating Companions - I'm sure we can all agree this page need's some major work, and ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I'll initially be working on the page Here.

Initial aims;

  • Place the gallery on a separate page here Gallery of Companions
  • Remove duplication, presently many pets are listed then re-listed under the consolidated table
  • List pets under a group of coherent charts, possibly;
    • WoW classic
    • Burning Crusade
    • WotLK
    • Cataclysm
    • Other sources

or

    • Obtainable through quests
    • Obtainable through vendors
    • Obtainable through achievements
    • Obtainable through guild achievements
    • Obtainable through World events
    • Obtainable from other sources

Either method would of course use (possibly) the other method to sub categorize, I'm leaning toward the second my-self.

Anyway as always input is greatly appreciated.

Table-izing (is that a word?) the lists would be a good start. While you're working a complete revamp on your sub-page, I may go through and just turn some lists into tables on Companions. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 9:32 AM PST 10 Dec 2010
See how Mounts got broken down. A single page showing all possible companions becomes unsupportably large IMO. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 19:26, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
That's the whole point - it's all-ready way to large, hence the first step of moving the gallery to it's own page. Wren (talk) 19:38, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Table-izing (is that a word?)
If it wasn't - it is now :) Wren (talk) 19:38, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
How about doing something similar to Alchemy recipes? In that, there is a page Alchemy recipes/Journeyman which is then transcluded (but initially hidden via Ajax, to not take up too much space). Following this approach, all of the information would still be presented to the user on Companion, but the page would be much less cluttered and the table(s) would be stored in a subpage. Alternatively, you could go ahead with your gallery, and still follow this approach to break down the gallery into transcludes. D.D. Corkum (T / C) 03:29, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I like that idea - I'm going to play around with a few ideas - see what works best. Although by moving the gallery to a seperate page (after all most people who go to the page are not after images but info on how /where to obtain a certain pet) table-izing the content and removing duplication we will cut the page to half if not 2/3 of it's current size and make the info more accessible. I have made some drastic changes to the page -- didn't touch the gallery yet though, going to wait to see what the consensus is. My personal opinion is that there shouldn't even be a gallery like that. Just a few pictures showing a steriotypical companion alongside a character should suffice to hilight what a companion is. Images of each companion belong on the content pages of those companions. One thing that needs to happen is "table-izing" some of the lists. I did the achievement and engineering lists... the others are a bit big so I'm going to take a break.D.D. Corkum (T / C) 17:07, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Agreed on the gallery. Killed the ajax. Removed the list by expansion to its own page; it's almost a trivial sub-categorization of pets, as it seems plausible to assume that [most] people are playing with the latest expansion. Also agreed on having a few pictures of pets in each of the sections. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sky2042 (talk · contr).
lol, deja vous. Still, all the reorganising I did to the list still holds, and the table-izing will probably eliminate the need for ajax anyways. D.D. Corkum (T / C) 18:52, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Indeed. Anyway, the page needs more "re"organizing (if it ever had organization? :). --Sky (talk) 19:02, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. And no, before today it had no real structure. I've tried to improve it a bit. Anyways, the world event section has been table-ized. D.D. Corkum (T / C) 19:18, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm getting to the organizing, once I'm done I'll post here before switching to the main page. Wren (talk) 20:06, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
There's been a lot of changes to the main page since the copy on your sandbox pages. You might want to take a look. D.D. Corkum (T / C) 20:39, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
