Guild hopper is a term used to describe players of World of Warcraft who join a guild for the sole purpose of gaining loot, then leaving to join another guild. It was possible for this type of player to gear themselves up in a very short space of time by gaining drops from boss kills with their guild.

Deterring Guild HoppersEdit

Since taking loot and leaving a guild is considered by many to be detrimental to guild progress, many guilds have taken steps to prevent this behavior. Such actions include:

  • Trial Periods: New players are not allowed to receive loot for a certain period of time.
  • DKP: A DKP system also prevents guild hopping as most systems require a player to earn points before receiving loot.
  • Research: Talking to other players who may know the applicant and using tools like Warcraft Realms
