Evocation restores a fixed amount of mana based on the mage's total mana pool, including all current buffs and gear which increase this total. The Wildhammer dwarves' signature weapon, this dwarven battle hammer is beautifully crafted, with a lightning bolt patter carved into the polished wooden haft and clouds and lightning etched into the faceted metal head. Even the leather wrapped around the handle is mottled to suggest clouds and rain. The wielder swinging the hammer can cause a copy of the weapon to appear and fly towards the target, allowing it to be used as a ranged weapon.{{Cite|APG|93}}

The signature weapon of elite gryphon teams, storm hammers must be rededicated to their owners each year. The ceremony is held every solstice in the great halls of the gryphon aviaries. The details of the ceremony are secret, but they are said to involve chanting, solemn oaths, and terrible hangovers the next day.{{Cite|WRPG|144}}

For those trained to draw on its power, the wellspring of magical energy is limitless.[1]

Evocation is a mana regeneration utility spell that allows a mage to recover mana very quickly, even in battle. It's learned at lvl 12. The spell is channeled over 6 seconds; the mage cannot take another action, else the channeling will be interrupted, as with all channeled spells. Any damage taken (excluding active DoTs) may reduce the channeling time, which in turn reduces the amount of mana gained. "Evocate" is often used as a verb; to evocate is to channel the Evocation spell.

Evocation restores a fixed amount of mana based on the mage's total mana pool, including all current buffs and gear which increase this total. Mana is restored at a rate of 15% of the mage's total mana every 2 seconds, for a total of 4 ticks over 6 seconds plus an instant 15% gain, or 60% mana in total.

Tips and tactics

  • Evocation is excellent for longer fights, such as PvE raid boss encounters. This spell reduces the mage's need for a large mana pool, allowing him to focus his gear on other areas such as damage output.
  • Items in the weapon slots (main hand, off hand and wand) can be swapped while in combat. The amount of mana restored on each tick is based on the current maximum mana. Swapping weapons to ones with high intellect, thus raising the maximum mana value while evocating can increase the amount of mana restored. This can be accomplished with a macro, or with an add-on that does it automatically.
  • A damage shield such as Spell ice lament [Ice Barrier] or Spell holy powerwordshield [Power Word: Shield] will prevent loss of channeling time from damage. However, using Spell shadow detectlesserinvisibility [Mana Shield] may be questionable, as the amount of channeling time saved from the shield may be negated by the mana consumed by the shield. Spell frost coldhearted [Icy Veins] will prevent the channeling time lost too.
  • With the Inv glyph majormage [Glyph of Evocation] you regain 60% of your health during your evocation channel, which can really help in tough situations and reduce downtime.

Patches and hotfixes

  • Wrath-Logo-Small Patch 3.0.8 (2009-01-20): Cooldown reduced to 4m, and the talent Arcane Flows reduces this cooldown further by 1m/2m.
  • Bc icon Patch 2.3.0 (2007-11-13): Evocation now regenerates 15% of total mana every 2 seconds rather than increase Spirit based regeneration.
  • Bc icon Patch 2.2.0 (2007-09-25): The animation for the spell was changed to the new animation also used for Spell nature earthbind [Cyclone], only blue.
  • Bc icon Patch 2.2.0 (2007-09-25): Abilities that grant a power increases (such as Evocation) were changed to guarantee a consistent number of ticks of regeneration at the increased level. For Evocation, this means that as soon as the spell is cast, a single tick of mana regen will be awarded at the normal level, then exactly 2 seconds and every 2 seconds after, the 1500% of mana regeneration will be returned, guaranteeing a full 4 ticks of increased regen every time. Previously, with unfortunate timing, increased mana would be returned on only 3 ticks.
  • WoW Icon update Patch 1.12.0 (2006-08-22): Evocation can no longer be used while silenced.
  • WoW Icon update Patch 1.11.0 (2006-06-19): The mage talent review moved this spell from the Arcane tree to a trainer-purchased spell, available to all mages at level 20.
