Trade Prince Gallywix is the much-maligned leader of the Bilgewater Cartel, one of the most powerful goblin trade guilds on Kezan. Despite betraying his own people in a petty act of vengeance, he retains his position as Trade Prince of the Bilgewater Cartel in its service to the Horde.

Biography

Gallywix views the players as his rival in the race for the Trade Prince role. He holds the only ship out of Kezan and you become his slave after buying your place in the ship which sails to Azshara, but due to being caught in a naval battle between the Alliance and the Horde, the ship is sunk near the Lost Isles[1].

He turns out to have survived the Alliance attack and is one of the first goblins freed by the player. Afterwards Gallywix will be with the other goblin survivors. After the player rescues former Warchief Thrall and before the residents on the Lost Isles use Foreman Dampwick's rocket sling to get to a larger isle, Gallywix arrives and vows to crush the player before using the rocket sling himself.

He later enslaves members of the Bilgewater Cartel and uses them as slaves in Gallywix Reeducation Cavern. At this point he was able to turn the player's friend Chip Endale to his side. After Chip's death, Gallywix begins going out with Candy Cane, the Goblin male player's ex-girlfriend.

Soon afterwards the player, with the aid of Thrall, fight and defeat the Trade Prince. Afterwards, Gallywix gives up the fight and promises to reform how he runs the cartel. Thrall after a moment of thought allows Gallywix to remain as the Trade Prince of the Bilgewater Cartel, informs him that the cartel will have a new home in Azshara and that they will join the Horde. Gallywix then promises his loyalty to the Horde.

Unfortunately Gallywix seems to resume his poor treatment of the player as evidenced by him saying he's not talking to you and you're not getting a raise.

Controversial future

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Many have noticed the strangeness in Thrall appointing Gallywix as leader. Even the goblins themselves are portrayed as hating Gallywix as a traitor, and in a starting quest one goblin even calls him a monster and expresses horror at the possibility of his survival. Gallywix's crimes and follies in chronological order are: selling the player and others into slavery after he made them give up their life savings, getting his ship caught between an Alliance battalion and Horde transport, plotting against the player despite them saving his life, not helping on the Lost Isles, leaving the goblins behind to take over Azshara, teaming up with the Southsea Freebooters and rogue elements of the Steamwheedle Cartel, enslaving the goblins in a mine called the Gallywix Reeducation Cavern, while simultaneously attempting to brainwash them, and employing abusive Hobgoblin slavemasters. He was even attempting to kill Thrall in his machine right before he was re-appointed leader. Finally, the starting zone refers to Trade Princes being elected,[citation needed]  meaning getting a new goblin Trade Prince would not be difficult. Part of the reason Gallywix had it in for the player's goblin in the first place was everyone was supporting the protagonist in his attempts at a promotion over Gallywix. It is possible that he is hoping that being stuck with a horrible leader for a while might make the Goblins more open to Horde leadership. After all, if goblins get stuck with Gallywix long enough, any other goblin will seem to be an improvement. On the other (more controversial) hand, Gallywix represents the pinnacle of traditional goblin values, and may have value to the Horde in that way.[citation needed]

As Gallywix is highly unpopular both in the game and in reality, and every other racial leader is at least nice to their own people, he may not be the real racial leader but only a temporary one. Supporting this is Thrall's dialogue that Gallywix will lead "for now."

A possible replacement exists as Boss Mida, a product of the fan-made Trade Princess Movement, who runs the Goblin Slums.

Thrall's intentions may be more far sighted than we realize. Thrall knows perfectly well that Garrosh is not fully up to leading yet, and is counting on the other Horde leaders to keep him in check until he grows into his role. The goblins are a potential spanner in the works, though. If Thrall had a new leader appointed in Gallywix's place, the odds are high that new leader is someone who would feel grateful to the Horde for its aid. Grateful enough, perhaps, to not question Garrosh or work against him if need be. Nor can Thrall tell his new member nation "Welcome to the Horde, don't turn your back on the guy in charge." But with Gallywix, Thrall has someone who will do exactly that without Thrall having do anything to ensure it. Gallywix can keep Garrosh on his toes in a way no other Horde leader except maybe Sylvanas could, but with the goblins as a whole being a lesser risk than the Forsaken.

Notes

  • In an early Cataclysm demo, this character was called Trade Prince Maldy. By the start of Cataclysm's closed beta, Maldy had been renamed to Trade Prince Gallywix. There still is a reference to Gallywix's old name, with the item Ability hunter pet dragonhawk [Maldy's Falcon] saying that Maldy was the predecessor to Gallywix as Trade Prince of the Bilgewater Cartel.
  • He may be related to Grand Foreman Puzik Gallywix of the Venture Company.
  • In Bilgewater Harbor, a goblin that may be Gallywix can be seen on posters, pointing forward (see Wrenchmen Recruitment Poster). This is probably a "join the army" poster and is likely inspired by the Uncle Sam posters of the United States Army. A goblin character called Uncle Bedlam stands in the main building of Bilgewater Harbor, possibly related to this.
  • Occasionally, when you click on him, he will say, "Stay out of my Pool." Which is possibly a reference to Carl Brutananadilewski, a character from the show Aqua Teen Hunger Force He often says the same sentence and has a similar voice.
