Frostmourne Cavern

Frostmourne Cavern in World of Warcraft.

Lore in Short - Muradin abandoned

Arthas Menethil leaving the unconscious Muradin Bronzebeard behind in Frostmourne Cavern.

Frostmourne Cavern[73, 23]VZ-DragonblightBlip is a cave located at the base of the Icecrown Glacier[1] where the dark runeblade Frostmourne once lay on an altar, encased in ice, with the following inscription: "Whomsoever takes up this blade shall wield power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit". The ice-rimmed cavern that extends back into the mountains is full of saronite.[2] The cavern was given its name by the Scarlet Onslaught.[3]

At the time of the Third War, its entrance was protected by a group of revenants led by one of them known as The Guardian.[4] When Arthas Menethil came with Muradin Bronzebeard to claim the artifact in his quest of destroying the dreadlord Mal'Ganis, the Guardian ordered them to turn back, and when they refused, a fight took place and all the revenants were destroyed. In its final moments, the Guardian attempted to stop Arthas, explaining that he was not protecting the sword, but everyone from it. However, the prince didn't listen and claimed Frostmourne from its ice prison, which caused its explosion, and a piece of it "killed" Muradin. As he couldn't save his mentor with the Light, Arthas discarded his holy warhammer, Inv hammer 04 [Light's Vengeance], and then returned to his base, leaving Muradin for dead.[5]

During the war against the Lich King, half-finished fortification of the Scarlet Onslaught stood watching over the entrance to Frostmourne Cavern. At Wintergarde Keep, Zelig the Visionary sent Alliance adventurers to discover the secrets of the cave, and why the Onslaught was so interested in the latter. There they could see a flashback of the last interactions between Arthas and Muradin Bronzebeard as originally seen in Warcraft III, with a surprise ending showing Muradin's survival.[3] Next to Frostmourne's altar also lied Arthas' former hammer as well as Muradin's weapons, frozen in the snow.

At some point, Darion Mograine sent adventurers of the Ashen Verdict to collect Light's Vengeance in the cavern, in order to create an artifact to rival Frostmourne, believing that only the hammer of Arthas himself would provide a worthy model for the weapon,[6] that would later become Inv axe 113 [Shadowmourne].[2] However, the Lich King had predicted such a plan and tried to kill the adventurers by sending hordes of ghouls into the cavern, but they managed to escape by ironically using the sacred hammer of Arthas.[7]

Following the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeard visited the cavern, and Muradin mentioned that the weapons he wielded that day were still frozen in the ice. When his brother Brann tried to break them out, Muradin told him that they should stay here, along with everything he carried from those days, and let this remain a grave undisturbed.[2]
