In going through and updating zone/area articles I thought of a few things that would increase the readability/flow of those articles and wanted to pass those ideas along. Since I'm working with Ashenvale at the moment, I'll use that as an example.

How it stands right now: Ashenvale

Some tweaks and changes: User:Raylan13/Sandbox

  • One of the first things I did was incorporate all the Cataclysm changes into either the History or Geography sections, whichever seemed the most appropriate for that particular piece of information.
  • In every zone article, the subzones in the chart at the bottom of the page are also posted in the middle of the page. The subzone chart in the middle of the page isn't updated, and it seemed redundant to have them both. While the 'out of game' subzone notes remain intact, a small note was put in to draw the reader's attention to the bottom of the page for in-game subzones.
  • There are quite a few instances across the zones where pictures have been put into the page in unrelated places. Instead of scattering screenshots throughout the page, they've been moved to the bottom in 'pre-' and 'post-' Cataclysm sections. Not only does this keep them in one central area, it also allows a quick comparison between what was and what is in the game.
  • Rather than have screenshots in the core of the article (minus the maps section), some png images were placed in some of the sections; this would keep things standard across all articles, with the reader drawn to sections tagged by well-known pictures - i.e. the 'travel' section with a gryphon, or the 'quest' section with an exclamation point
  • A few charts were made: resources (complete with minimum skill level needed) and inhabitants by classification.
  • Some sections were rearranged/renamed for better flow.
  • Other sections which would fall onto zone pages would include (but aren't in Ashenvale's page): raids (in the areas of interest section), trivia and pop culture refs (in the additional information section), pre-Cataclysm videos (in the media section), and patch changes (put at the end, as usual, before the references section).

Town articles could also follow a similar flow, though some sections obviously wouldn't apply.

As I'm currently working on updating all the zones and subzones, I would have no problem making all these changes by myself. Thoughts? --Raylan13@fandom (talk) 19:33, January 5, 2011 (UTC)

I haven't looked at your sandbox too closely, but you might not want to diverge too much from WoWWiki:Manual of Style, or at least explain why you diverged.
Personally, I liked having the list of subzones uncollapsed in the middle of the article somewhere. Having to go to the bottom (that really has no TOC link) and then uncollapse the zone navigation template is awkward. Maybe we could standardize the zone template so you could transclude the subzone list into a section if the zone template appeared on the zone name page.
I would move PvP into Areas of Interest.
Also, you might want to start putting your philosophy and structure in Help:Location articles (← why isn't this a red link?).
Those are my initial thoughts. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 5:21 PM PST 5 Jan 2011
It does seem to make more sense to move the PvP section into the Areas of interest. I moved it up there in the sandbox version and also restored the subzone table in the center of the page with the updated locations. It would seem to make the most sense to not include the navbox at the bottom of zone pages only, as it would be redundant information (but it should, of course, be put on every subzone page). I'll look into transclusion.
I looked over the manual of style and it appears I'm still within those guidelines, with the exception of the headings. I went ahead and corrected that as well. I'll put a rough outline in the help article.
Thanks, as always. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 16:19, January 6, 2011 (UTC)

Went ahead and got some help tweaking that middle subregions section. It never showed the 'cat' symbols before, so I don't know that it's terribly important it does it now. We can always keep the subregions navbox at the bottom in case anyone wants to look at that on the zone page.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 17:58, January 6, 2011 (UTC)

Looks good. I'll probably start going through the zone templates as my next big project. At some point I'll remove all the Icon Cataclysm 18x18 icons and make a pre-Cataclysm zone template called "-old" for each zone. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:06 AM PST 6 Jan 2011
Turns out I'll have to do the subzone chart in the middle of the page by hand - for some reason using the dpl disabled listing the references. Seems to be a bug, but not a big deal to do by hand. Since it's just a copy+paste of the subzone template at the bottom of the page, I went ahead and removed the navbox from the zone pages (only) since it would be redundant. I'll just have to go back and update when you go through the zone templates. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 20:54, January 6, 2011 (UTC)
You're trying to be too fancy. See what I did with Arathi_Highlands#Maps_and_subregions. I re-use the zone template {{Arathi Highlands}}. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 7:26 PM PST 7 Jan 2011
Oh, nice. I'll be using that - thank you for figuring that out. Raylan13@fandom (talk) 03:33, January 8, 2011 (UTC)
Most of the zone templates are not modified to work this way, so look at the changes I made to {{Arathi Highlands}}. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:10 AM PST 10 Jan 2011
Aha. Noted for future use. Thanks again.Raylan13@fandom (talk) 21:21, January 10, 2011 (UTC)
