I am a Trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Birmingham.
As a player of World of Warcraft myself, I wanted to carry out some research into the effects of the game on wellbeing. Some people say that these games are beneficial whilst others argue that playing too much may be bad for you. From personal experience I know that some World of Warcraft players have had some difficulties, but I also know many that play the game with few or no problems. I, therefore, want to consider the reasons why people choose to play World of Warcraft, and if this has any impact on how playing affects people. I think that this is really important in helping people to understand the game and the people who play. As well as helping to identify people who may have difficulties, so that we can help them and make World of Warcraft a more acceptable, understood and beneficial hobby for those involved.
That is why I am asking for your help.
Anyone who plays World of Warcraft who is over 18 years of age and has at least one level 85 character is welcome to take part in the study. This is due to the research looking specifically at those playing 'end-game- content rather than 'levelling'. The questions will be in English so fluent English language is also required.
Any answers will be confidential as you will not be asked to give any names or identifying information. None of your answers will be stored until you submit your survey so you can stop taking part at any point during the survey. Once you have submitted, your data will be put into a database and will not be identifiable to you.
The survey will take approximately 20-30minutes to complete.
The results will be written up into my Final Year Thesis, with a view to publication in a scientific journal.
If you have any further questions you wish to ask about the study before taking part, please contact me via e-mail : firstname.lastname@example.org
