The dragon turtles of Pandaria are cherished for their heavy carrying capacity and steady gait. They are the mount of choice for most native pandaren,[3] who have long sought mounts that embody their values: patience and strength. With a naturally armored hide, even gait, and a relaxed attitude that welcomes long journeys, dragon turtles are the perfect mounts for pandaren adventurers. They are easily outfitted with adventure essentials (like maps, cushions, and brew-storage), and their slow stride can ease their passengers both into new parts of the world and into a relaxing nap.[1] In addition, their low stance means the rider experiences no bounce or jostle, even when cornering sharply.[4] However, while dragon turtles appear slow at a glance, when handled by an experienced rider they can move fast enough to keep pace with even the swiftest wolves in Kalimdor.[5]

There are six colors available for purchase in Stormwind City and Orgrimmar, namely Green, Black, Blue, Brown, Purple and Red. The Apprentice mounts are labeled "<Color> Dragon Turtle". The Journeyman mounts are labeled "Great <Color> Dragon Turtle".

In the RPG[]

Icon-RPG This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

A dragon turtle is an enormous, red-skinned, blackshelled variety of sea turtle. It has a primal and fearsome appearance. Though squat, it stands 10 feet high. Some naga captured and trained a few dragon turtles to augment their soldiers, but this tactic is not widespread. Though some thought turtles were slow and unimpressive, this creature proves that thought wrong.[6]

A dragon turtle can swallow opponents large or small and can hold either 2 Large, 8 Medium, 32 Small, 128 Tiny, or 512 Diminutive or smaller opponents in their gullet at one time.[6]

Notes and trivia[]

  • When first introduced in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, dragon turtles were exclusively associated with the naga and looked like large, red-skinned versions of common turtles. In Mists of Pandaria, they instead became associated with Pandaria and the pandaren and were given a more unique design. The latter was subsequently also used for the dragon turtles used by the naga elsewhere in the world in Legion and Battle for Azeroth.
  • In Chinese mythology, the dragon turtle (龙龟, Lóngguī) is a legendary creature combining the features of two of the four celestial creatures: the head of a dragon on the body of a turtle.
