WarCraftII-TidesOfDarkness-Orcs-Mission13-SiegeOfDalaran

Cross Island and its defenders during the Second War.

This article contains lore taken from Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

Cross Island was a cross-shaped island in southern Lordamere Lake depicted in Warcraft II.[1] The Violet Citadel, the capital of the nation of Dalaran, was described as being located on the island, outside the city of Dalaran itself.[2][3] The Old Horde besieged the island during the Second War,[1] and the region was later attacked again when the Horde of Draenor invaded Dalaran in search of the Eye of Dalaran.[4]

The island first appeared in Warcraft II and possibly appears in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, as well as being mentioned in the novel The Last Guardian. However, it does not appear in World of Warcraft; Dalaran is instead depicted as a city-state on the shore of Lordamere Lake, and the Violet Citadel is located inside the city rather than on an island outside it. Cross Island has not been mentioned in any other sources since.

Speculation[]

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

In Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, a stretch of land connects Cross Island to Lordamere's southern shore, which would technically make it a peninsula, however, this is most probably because no bridges are included in the game.

In Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the northwest portion of Cross Island may possibly be visible in two of the level maps (Misconceptions and A Dark Covenant). Although not clearly recognizable, it still seems to have remained cross-shaped, but other level maps mentioned below might suggest that its southern shore was transformed into a moat. It is possible that the southwest portion was seen during Under the Burning Sky, the southern portion was seen during The Siege of Dalaran, and the southeastern portion during The Ruins of Dalaran.
