Barean Westwind of Kul Tiras was a prominent member of the Scarlet Crusade and the Grand Admiral of the Scarlet Fleet. He disappeared off the Frozen Coast of Northrend, and a statue was erected in his honor in the Scarlet Monastery's Hall of Champions.[1] During the war against the Lich King, Westwind seemingly returned to lead the Scarlet Onslaught. In reality, however, he was dead, his corpse being used as a disguise for the dreadlord Mal'Ganis.

Shortly before the war against the Lich King, Mal'Ganis began whispering to High General Brigitte Abbendis and High Abbot Landgren, posing as the voice of the Light itself, and guided them into creating the Scarlet Onslaught and sailing to the Dragonblight in Northrend. One month into the construction of New Hearthglen, Landgren proclaimed that the Light was going to send the Onslaught a visitor to lead them to victory. Shortly after, Mal'Ganis assumed Barean Westwind's appearance and sought out Abbendis. Abbendis had heard that Westwind had died in Northrend years prior and noted that the "admiral" looked younger than he should, but was nonetheless convinced when he claimed to have survived the destruction of his fleet through the grace of the Light. Although "Westwind" claimed that he didn't intend to replace Abbendis,[2] he effectively undermined her authority and took over command of the Onslaught.[3]

Westwind warned Abbendis about the Alliance and Horde's upcoming invasion of Northrend, and created the sect of raven priests by passing on a "blessing" from the Light to High Abbot Landgren. Abbendis felt that something wasn't right about the admiral, but dismissed the feeling and resolved to stay faithful, even though the "Light" had stopped speaking to her in conjunction with the admiral's arrival. Shortly after the Alliance and Horde's arrival to the Dragonblight, Westwind ordered some Onslaught men to begin building a new base, Onslaught Harbor, off the coast of Icecrown.[2]

When adventurers of the Alliance and Horde entered New Hearthglen's cathedral to kill Abbendis, Westwind stood by, protected by a magic shield, and watched them to kill her. He commented that Abbendis had "served her purpose", told the heroes that they'd see each other in Icecrown, and then teleported away. Eligor Dawnbringer and High Executor Wroth were both concerned by the admiral's escape but decided that he'd have to be dealt with later.[4]

Westwind retreated to Onslaught Harbor and holed himself up in the Hidden Hollow to prepare for the final battle against the Lich King.[5] After adventurers discovered the admiral's whereabouts, Lord-Commander Arete of the Ebon Blade gave them a device to nullify Westwind's magic shield, then sent them to the Hidden Hollow to kill him. During the battle, Westwind shed his disguise and revealed his true identity as Mal'Ganis, who upon defeat escaped through a portal to "the homeworld".[6]
