Baelgun Flamebeard was a dwarf who served as Muradin Bronzebeard's second-in-command of the Dwarven Expedition to Northrend during the Third War. After Muradin's disappearance and supposed death, Baelgun led his forces into the depths of Azjol-Nerub, where he was ultimately killed by Arthas Menethil and Anub'arak.
Biography[]
Around the time of the Third War, Baelgun accompanied the Dwarven Expedition to Northrend as Muradin Bronzebeard's second-in-command.[1] When Mal'Ganis and the Scourge attacked Muradin and Arthas' combined camp, Baelgun organized the dwarves' defenses while his counterpart Falric organized the humans.[2]
Following Muradin's supposed "death", Baelgun took command of the remaining dwarves and led them to take shelter in the Shadow Web Caverns of Azjol-Nerub. The tunnels of the city were later shaken by earthquakes caused by the Eye of Sargeras, freeing the long-forgotten faceless ones in the depths. Baelgun and his men sealed the gates to the Inner Kingdom, vowing to keep the monsters locked inside. When Arthas and Anub'arak's Scourge forces entered Azjol-Nerub, they were attacked by the dwarves and fought through them until they confronted Baelgun at the entrance to the Inner Kingdom. Baelgun refused to let Arthas through and warned him about the horrors locked inside, but Arthas paid the dwarf no heed and killed him with Frostmourne before proceeding into the Inner Kingdom.[3]
Baelgun's soul was freed from Frostmourne's grasp when the blade was destroyed several years later. His soul started roaming Icecrown Citadel, forced to repeat the moment of his demise for eternity. Death knights seeking to reforge the shards of Frostmourne into the Blades of the Fallen Prince destroyed Baelgun's spirit in order to claim the shard that he was guarding.[4]
Muradin has since expressed interest in retrieving Baelgun's remains from Azjol-Nerub.[5]

In the RPG[]
Baelgun and many of his dwarves survived, and Brann visited him at Doorward when he came to Northrend.[6]
This dwarven scout is short and stocky, even for one of his race. His flame-red beard looks like it would brush the top of his boots when loose, though a double braid hangs only to his knees. He scowls beneath his thick red eyebrows, and his battered nose is all but lost between brow and beard. In battle Baelgun is a fierce and wily opponent, leaping into the fray and swinging from side to side, deliberately using his braids to distract opponents from his whirling hammer. Baelgun is smart enough to retreat when the odds turn against him, and he is not above attacking from behind — though with his bulk and coloring, he is not built for stealth. Since Muradin Bronzebeard's death, Baelgun was the leader of the Bronzebeard Expedition. He and the other survivors are camped near the entrance to Azjol-Nerub and guard it to ensure that nothing escapes from within.[6]
Trivia[]
- Baelgun's Excavation Site can be found in the Howling Fjord. Anub'arak drops [Flamebeard's Bracers] in Azjol-Nerub and [Baelgun's Heavy Crossbow] in the Trial of the Crusader.
- In his first appearance in Warcraft III, only Baelgun's first name was mentioned. The surname "Flamebeard" was first added in Lands of Mystery (2006), a now non-canon sourcebook for the Warcraft RPG, before being canonized in Legion (2016).
