However, the hilt is described as resembling the neck and heads of "[[red dragon]]s", not black. Why Nefarian would transform the sword into something bearing his enemies' appearance makes little sense - unless it's a trophy.

Inv sword 50
Ashkandi

A paladin shown wielding Ashkandi.

Ashkandi

An orc can be seen wielding Ashkandi in the Burning Crusade cinematic

Ashkandi, Greatsword of the Brotherhood is an epic two-handed sword that drops from Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, at about a 7% rate.

Background

This massive two-handed sword has a hilt resembling the intertwined necks and heads of two red dragons. The weapon’s wicked, impossibly sharp blade only hints at the massive power contained within.[1]

Notes

This weapon has been replaced by many Burning Crusade weapons, but as of patch 1.11, this was the third highest DPS sword in the game, along with [Claymore of Unholy Might], being beaten slightly by [Kalimdor's Revenge], a drop from the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, and [Corrupted Ashbringer]. The high stamina bonus made this an ideal weapon for warriors and paladins.

Anduin Lothar's sword

Questionmark-medium
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

It is believed this sword once belong to Anduin Lothar, due to the initials on its hilt (A.L.) and the title "Greatsword of the Brotherhood" (referring to the Brotherhood of the Horse). Lothar was the Regent Lord of Azeroth and Champion of King Llane, but was killed by Orgrim Doomhammer during the closing battles in the Second War.

Some speculate that Quel'Zaram and Ashkandi are two names for the same sword, but in the RPG they are two separate weapons. Others speculate that Ashkandi is the Great Royal Sword of Stormwind. The Monster Guide gives a description of Ashkandi, and states that it is made of thorium, but does not mention Lothar.

This sword is now found in the possession of Nefarian in Blackwing Lair, presumably due to his father Neltharion's involvement in the ending of the Second War. Some believe it have been modified or corrupted by Nefarian or one of his underlings due to its blackened appearance. However, the hilt is described as resembling the neck and heads of "red dragons", not black. Why Nefarian would transform the sword into something bearing his enemies' appearance makes little sense - unless it's a trophy.
