The Sundering

N'Zoth may have been one of the voices (along with two others) heard whispering to Queen Azshara during the Great Sundering.

The Nightmare Lord

N'Zoth was responsible for the Emerald Nightmare and had been manipulating the satyr Xavius and ruling vicariously through him under the guise of the Nightmare Lord. After Malfurian defeated Xavius, N'Zoth and a portion of the Nightmare remained in the Rift of Aln which was then sealed off by Malfurian until such a time came that another war could be won in his favor. N'Zoth's dream form supposedly still resides in the Rift of Aln.

Yogg-Saron's Warnings

In the Cataclysm expansion, players can obtain a rare Nerubian puzzle box related to Yogg-Saron's dread and mysterious nature. The puzzle appears impossible to solve, but with every attempt the player makes they hear Yogg-Saron whispering oracular and chilling knowledge to them. Some of these whispers appear to be warning the player about the presence of N'Zoth:

  • At the bottom of the ocean even light must die...
  • The drowned god's heart is black ice...
  • In the sunken city, he lays dreaming...

Background

During BlizzCon 2010's Quests and Lore panel, Chris Metzen revealed that the third named Old God, which is to be revealed in Cataclysm, will be called N'Zoth (or N'Zath). Metzen also implied that this Old God may be the one "signing Deathwing's checks" and that N'Zoth is also responsible for the Emerald Nightmare.

N'Zoth's name is derived from Zoth-Ommog of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Just as Zoth-Ommog was imprisoned by the Elder Gods beneath the seabed; N'Zoth was imprisoned by the Titans under what is now the Great Sea. Zoth-Ommog is the third son of Cthulhu; and coincidentally N'Zoth is the third Old God to be added to the Warcraft universe.
