[[User:Pcj|Pcj]] added support to the {{t|loot}} template to use JS to create search links for missing items in the new {{wotlk-inline}} DBs for [[Wowhead]] and [[Thottbot]].
  +
  +
To point a loot link to the new {{wotlk-inline}} βeta DBs, just add <tt>|db=wtolk</tt> to your template wikicode, like so...
  +
  +
Missing item with search links:
  +
*Wikicode: <tt><nowiki>{{loot|rare|Made up Mysterious Loot|db=wotlk}}</nowiki></tt>

*Result: {{loot|rare|Made up Mysterious Loot|db=wotlk}}

I noticed this awhile back, but I'm not sure what we should do about it. Try out the DB links for the following (at least one should not have been entered yet):
  +
:{{t|loot|poor|Argent Lance|Argent Lances}}
  +
:{{loot|common|Argent Lance|Argent Lances}}

  +
:{{loot|epic|Greater Inscription of the Axe|Greater Inscriptions of the Axe}}
  +
All I did was use a plural label, but the search DB links use the label instead of the item name, so they don't work.
  +
  +
I think we should have the search use the item name, but there is a drawback. The search link also breaks if you have an item name that is disambiguated and missing like (the Wowhead link below works, but the Thottbot one doesn't):
  +
:{{t|loot|rare|Medallion of the Horde (Death Knight)}}
  +
:{{loot|rare|Medallion of the Horde (Death Knight)}}
  +
No one took the time to make class specific Medallions of the Horde, I guess.
  +

:The "searching by label instead of item name" could probably be fixed. Your second example about the insignia search is because Thottbot searches for the whole argumentt, while Wowhead doesn't search for things within brackets (compare [http://www.wowhead.com/?search=(Death+knight "(Death knight)"] and [http://www.wowhead.com/?search=(Death+knight) "(Death knight)"] searches. And about the medallions not being class specific is because there is little to no difference - the insignias for all classes provides the same stats, and the only thing that sets them apart is the "Classes:" text. There shouldn't be a need to create articles for each individual version. --{{User:Gourra/Sig2}} 07:02, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

== Relation to "item" ==
  +
  +
There are two templates to do the same thing: [[Template:Loot]] and [[Template:Item]]. Why are there two? There should be some description on both pages when to use one or the other. Or deprecate one of them. [[User:Manski|Manski]] ([[User talk:Manski|talk]]) 07:54, February 24, 2010 (UTC)
  +
  +
:Loot is made to specify the item quality, and also helps by making a search if the item doesn't exist. Item pulls directly the item quality from the item if it exists, and can also be used to show the icon, which isn't support by Loot. It also has some relation to load times, but I'm not sure about that... Maybe someone else have a better explanation for that. --{{User:Gourra/Sig2}} 12:04, February 24, 2010 (UTC)
  +
  +
::Partly the load times, but much more involved with fetch exhaustion (or some such term). Certain pages in the past have had vast numbers of instances of {{t|item}}. (example:[[Blacksmithing recipes]]. Between transcluded pages and all, literally hundreds of links.) The wiki software, after a certain point, stopped processing the transclusions. Likely, a safety feature to prevent circular links from locking up the software. Converting (back) to {{t|loot}} cured that. Thus at a minimum, pages with many links should be using {{t|loot}} instead.
  +
  +
::Personally, I'm more a fan of ''loot'' than ''item'', as the icon abilities of the latter tend (IMO) to get overused. As well, I'm in favor of the lighter processing load generally. But ''item'' is the one most commonly used, particularly when only a few items links are needed (such as on quest pages). --[[User:Eirik Ratcatcher|Eirik Ratcatcher]] ([[User talk:Eirik Ratcatcher|talk]]) 21:11, February 24, 2010 (UTC)

So I was wondering if there's any way to add a line to the template which allows an id=xxxx field in the template. This would only be useful for items which have no page on the wiki, but would set the four miniature elinks to link directly to the appropriate page. Some items just don't need an article here, but a direct elink might be a nice replacement :)

Support for Wrath of the Lich King βeta DBs

Pcj added support to the {{loot}} template to use JS to create search links for missing items in the new Wrath-Logo-Small DBs for Wowhead and Thottbot.

To point a loot link to the new Wrath-Logo-Small βeta DBs, just add |db=wtolk to your template wikicode, like so...

Missing item with search links:

  • Wikicode: {{loot|rare|Made up Mysterious Loot|db=wotlk}}

So until the expansion is released, we can use these links. --Gengar orange 22x22 Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:06 PM PST 9 Aug 2008

I think we should have the search use the item name, but there is a drawback. The search link also breaks if you have an item name that is disambiguated and missing like (the Wowhead link below works, but the Thottbot one doesn't):

{{loot|<rare>|<Medallion of the Horde (Death Knight)>}}
[Medallion of the Horde (Death Knight)]

No one took the time to make class specific Medallions of the Horde, I guess.

Should I still ask Pcj to have the search links use the item name? --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:49 PM PST 5 Apr 2009

The "searching by label instead of item name" could probably be fixed. Your second example about the insignia search is because Thottbot searches for the whole argumentt, while Wowhead doesn't search for things within brackets (compare "(Death knight)" and "(Death knight)" searches. And about the medallions not being class specific is because there is little to no difference - the insignias for all classes provides the same stats, and the only thing that sets them apart is the "Classes:" text. There shouldn't be a need to create articles for each individual version. --g0urra[T҂C] 07:02, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, Mr. Pcj seem to have to fix the label search thing, as it's on MediaWiki:Tooltips.js, and it's way out of my league. --g0urra[T҂C] 07:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I looked at Pcj's changes and they don't seem to be related to the search, he just appears to be optimizing his code. Also, his last changes were on March 30th. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 5:59 PM PST 7 Apr 2009
Looking more at Pcj's code, I think I know the problem, but I'm not a good enough javascript whiz to fix it without potentially screwing things up royally.
He appears to be picking out the name to use for search from the HTML source, but is picking the label, because it doesn't have underscores.
Here is some example HTML for a missing item {{loot}} link:
<a href="/index.php?title=Prismatic_Black_Diamond&action=edit&amp;redlink=1" class="new" title="Prismatic Black Diamond (not yet written)" rel="nofollow"><span class="itemlink qc-uncommon" title="Prismatic Black Diamonds is an uncommon quality item."><span class="bracket">&#91;</span>Prismatic Black Diamonds<span class="bracket">&#93;</span></span></a>
From what I can parse of his code, he's grabbing the Prismatic Black Diamonds, instead of Prismatic_Black_Diamond or Prismatic Black Diamond. It must be because that is the easiest name to grab without having to remove underscores or chop of the parenthetical stuff. I'll put a note on his talk page to look at this discussion. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:23 PM PST 7 Apr 2009
Fixed (or will be when the cache rolls through). Next time just tell me. --PcjWowpedia wiki manager (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 01:37, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Next time, I'll just tell you directly. I wasn't sure if the previous functionality was intentional and I was just missing the reason, since no one else reported it to you. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1:03 PM PST 8 Apr 2009

Heirlooms

Is there a way to use this template and use the Bind to Account coloring? i.e. set quality to BOA or Account and it shows up as the correct color? Example: |{{Loot|Rare|Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector}} | align="center" | {{cost|150|}} || Arcanum Is now a Bind on Account quality item, not a Rare quality item. does [Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector] work? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 22:00, January 25, 2010 (UTC)

Relation to "item"

There are two templates to do the same thing: Template:Loot and Template:Item. Why are there two? There should be some description on both pages when to use one or the other. Or deprecate one of them. Manski (talk) 07:54, February 24, 2010 (UTC)

Loot is made to specify the item quality, and also helps by making a search if the item doesn't exist. Item pulls directly the item quality from the item if it exists, and can also be used to show the icon, which isn't support by Loot. It also has some relation to load times, but I'm not sure about that... Maybe someone else have a better explanation for that. --g0urra[T҂C] 12:04, February 24, 2010 (UTC)
Partly the load times, but much more involved with fetch exhaustion (or some such term). Certain pages in the past have had vast numbers of instances of {{item}}. (example:Blacksmithing recipes. Between transcluded pages and all, literally hundreds of links.) The wiki software, after a certain point, stopped processing the transclusions. Likely, a safety feature to prevent circular links from locking up the software. Converting (back) to {{loot}} cured that. Thus at a minimum, pages with many links should be using {{loot}} instead.
Personally, I'm more a fan of loot than item, as the icon abilities of the latter tend (IMO) to get overused. As well, I'm in favor of the lighter processing load generally. But item is the one most commonly used, particularly when only a few items links are needed (such as on quest pages). --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 21:11, February 24, 2010 (UTC)
