The Stormwind Guard[1] (or the Stormwind Garrisons)[2] is a military organization of the Stormwind Army, which patrol and enforce the kingdom's law in the regions of Elwynn Forest, Duskwood, Westfall, and the Redridge Mountains. The kingdom being split into several smaller territories, some villages such as Goldshire and Lakeshire, and other territories like Northshire Valley, are governed by appointed Marshals in charge of the garrisons.[3] Their guards can be seen patrolling or guarding the regions' scout towers, assisting and protecting the citizens when needed.
History[]
Following the Third War, Elwynn Forest was heavily patrolled by the Stormwind Guard and remained a peaceful land. Their towers stood vigilant every few miles, helping to keep the forest safe from the rampaging forces of the Horde.[4]
Before he retired from active duty, Marshal Haggard used to lead the Stormwind Guard. At the time, they would get drinks at the Scarlet Raven Tavern in Darkshire.[1]
World of Warcraft[]
Because of Lady Katrana Prestor's political machinations in the kingdom, the Stormwind Guard pulled stake and abandoned Westfall when the cost of upkeep became too great. Due to the lack of military protection in Westfall, the Defias Brotherhood led by Edwin VanCleef made the region their new refuge and sowed anarchy and terror,[5] easily taking control of the poorly defended farmlands.[6] At the same time, the kingdom pulled all their troops out of Duskwood. Left to fend for themselves, the Night Watch was established to defend against the various threats that plagued Darkshire.[7]
- Elwynn Forest
After years of corruption and political instability, the Westbrook Garrison lived through difficult times when they had to deal with an increasing gnoll and thief activity coming from Westfall. With the bulk of the Stormwind Army abroad, they barely had enough men to keep the roads of the region safe.[8] At some point, Deputy Rainer requested more Stormwind soldiers from Marshal Dughan in Goldshire, who rather sent Alliance adventurers as reinforcements. With their help, the Garrison fought the Riverpaw pack, who infested the woods south of the guard tower, as they couldn't handle them alone.[9]
In Northshire Valley, Marshal McBride was concerned about the kobolds that have infested the woods and Echo Ridge Mine. He consequently marshaled paladins of the Silver Hand, warriors, and other recruits to get rid of the vermin.[10]
- Redridge Mountains
Unlike Duskwood, the Stormwind Army did not pull out of the Redridge Mountains. Despite this, the Stormwind Guard's presence in Redridge remained tenuous, and the situation became so dire that the army was eventually forced from the position of Stonewatch Keep.[11] The guards in Lakeshire were expecting the 2nd Battalion from Stormwind.[12]
Due to the lack of resources, adventurers have been hired to help the Stormwind Guard protect Lakeshire, notably to fight the Shadowhide clan and Redridge pack gnolls,[13][14] but also the Blackrock orcs who traveled from the Burning Steppes.[15] Marshal Marris enlisted the heroes to kill one of their leaders, Tharil'zun, responsible for some of the attacks on Lakeshire.[16]
At the time, the blacksmith Verner Osgood of Lakeshire used much of his iron to keep the Stormwind Guards outfitted, to the point that he no longer had enough to supply the stable's horses with shoes.[17]
Cataclysm[]
- Elwynn Forest
Following the Cataclysm, Marshal McBride and his guards had to deal with a full-fledged invasion by Blackrock clan orcs that have gained entry into the once secluded Northshire Valley through a passage in the mountains opened by the Shattering.[18]
- Redridge Mountains
Following the Cataclysm, Stormwind increased the Redridge Mountains's security by constructing the Tower Watch on the Three Corners, then stationed a garrison of Redridge watchmen there. On the order of King Varian Wrynn, the Alliance adventurers had to report at the scout tower, as Watch Captain Parker's forces have come under attack from marauding gnolls and Blackrock orcs.[19]
Despite the reinforcements, the Stormwind Guard was raided by gnolls who stole their supplies during a night, and Marshal Marris had to send the adventurers to recover them in the Redridge Canyons.[20] He also enlisted them to slaughter the orcs in Alther's Mill and Render's Camp, promising to reward them handsomely.[21] In Lakeshire, Bailiff Conacher posted a bounty on the murlocs of Lake Everstill, asking adventurers to kill as many as they can to be rewarded.[22]
Legion[]
At the beginning of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, numerous demonic invasions were launched across Azeroth. The region of Westfall subsequently became a primary target of the Burning Legion, and the Stormwind Army was quickly sent to repel the assault. Under the leadership of Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle, a contingent of troops with Stormwind Guards was deployed. Some of them could be encountered injured, being healed by priests, patrolling the region, or even being mind controlled by nathrezim. With the help of the Illidari and the adventurers, the army ultimately prevailed.
When the Hillsbrad Foothills was invaded, a few Stormwind guards were sent as reinforcements to help the Stormpike clan at Gavin's Naze.
Battle for Azeroth[]
During Fourth War, when the Horde infiltered Stormwind City to extract Princess Talanji, Prophet Zul, and Varok Saurfang from the Stormwind Stockade, the Stormwind Guard was on high alert alongside the Stormwind City Guard and the Stormwind Army. On the orders of King Anduin Wrynn, they lock down the capital and confined the population to their homes, refusing to let anyone outside until the threat has been subdued. Some could be seen on patrol, searching for the intruders.[23]
In the Vision of Stormwind, the bodies of several Stormwind guards could be found in the Trade District and the Cathedral Square.
Terror by Torchlight[]
Following the Fourth War, as a necromancer attempted to overwhelm Duskwood with an army of undead, Mathias Shaw sent extra guards from Stormwind as reinforcements after the necromancer hinted that the threat was not over.[24]
Shadowlands[]
During Death Rising, the Scourge began attacking the Redridge Mountains, and the Garrison Watchmen of Three Corners had to fortify their outpost under the leadership of Guard Captain Josephine.
When Lakeshire was attacked by the Scourge, the Stormiwnd guards could be seen guarding the bridge, and some were later killed by the undead.[25]
Dragonflight[]
After the Breadbasket Guild was established at the Saldean's Farm in Westfall, two Stormwind guards were sent to monitor and protect the farmers in the area.
