Al'ar

Al'ar the Phoenix God resides in The Eye

The phoenix is a natural predator of the Elemental Plane. The wondrous bird is about 18 feet long with a sleek, feathered body that dances with bright flames. Its colorful feathers range from yellow to orange to red. A crest of spiky feathers runs down the center of its back, and its wingspan stretches out 30 feet. From birth to death, it spends its life hunting through the air -- in fact, it lacks any legs that might enable it to land. Even after death it often rises again from its own ashes to continue the hunt.

The phoenix is a fearless, aggressive predator of aerial prey. Its only direct form is a vicious bite, but the secondary damage from its flaming aura and ability to burn help to bring down its prey quickly. A phoenix prefers to attack from above and behind with surprise, but follows up its initial attack by remaining close to burn its victims while continuing to strike with its beak.Template:Cite

The "phoenix god" is Mob Al'ar, found in Tempest Keep.

Summoning

Summon phoenix is a unique spell that Kael developed to summon fire elementals. It is similar to other summon monster spells, except it can only summon fire elementals. Kael invariably uses it to summon phoenixes, hence its name.Template:Cite The phoenix is the most powerful spell a Blood Mage can cast. The idea of a creature rising from its own ashes can also symbolize the blood elves who rose from the ashes of the slaughtered high elves. Thus the phoenix serves as an essential symbol of the blood elf race. Powerful Blood Mages, like Kael'thas, can summon phoenixes.

Flying Mount

The phoenix is also a dropped flying mount. The phoenix mount has the same +310% flying speed bonus as the Ability mount netherdrakeelite [Swift Nether Drake] arena award mount. This mount drops from Kael'thas, last boss in Tempest Keep: The Eye, and is called Inv misc summerfest brazierorange [Ashes of Al'ar]. The first ever phoenix mount was given to Ezra Chatterton when he went to Blizzard's offices with the Make-A-Wish foundation. Two days later it dropped for the Guild Method.

Eyonix, on May 1st, 2007, stated, "The phoenix mount is a rare drop, currently in-game." [1]

Myth

The Phoenix is a world-recognized image. The Egyptians believed that the bennu a sort of immortal heron, was the messenger of the gods, and the keeper of the Tablets of Destiny, according to the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The Greeks and Romans told tales of a fabulous bird who immolated itself, drawing forth a new bird from the ashes. Though it bears little resemblance to the bennu, this "phoenix" was said to dwell in Egypt, and was regarded as one of the civilization's lost wonders. The word "phoenix" is claimed to be Assyrian in origin.

Though differing greatly, the Fenghuang, a herald of destiny and good fortune, is usually referred to as the Asian Phoenix. They are also often shown with burning forms, much like the Western depiction of Phoenix.

Visually, the Warcraft phoenix follows the recent tradition of a fiery raptor, whereas the original phoenix (in both Egypt and China) looked more like an ibis or heron.
