See [[Vazruden]] for additional information seeing as how the two fight together.

When Nazan is in the fight at phase one, it will fly around shooting fireballs at random people. Once a healer recovers that person, they will keep aggro unless it is attacked. When the fireballs hit, they leave a nasty area of fire that takes down health rather quickly so it is best to hop out if hit with the fireball.

When Nazan is on the ground it is best that the tank has some nice fire resistance gear on, but it is not necessary. Have the tank spin Nazan around to not face the rest of the party. Nazan acts almost like Onyxia, as it does a fire breath attack, some nasty swipe attacks, and an AoE Fire Ring attack.

Alternate Strategy: Have ranged DPS burn down Nazan while he's in the air with dots / direct damage. Have melee DPS kill Vazruden. Using this strategy it's likely the tank will have to pick up and tank both Nazan and Vazruden. To mitigate this burst DPS, have the tank (if a warrior) burn shield wall for the landing and taunt. Continue killing Nazan, then finish Vazruden.

*UPDATE (Finley of the Gul'dan Realm)*

Once you kill the trash mob before the boss, Vazruden will jump off of Nazan. Keep the tank at the end of the ramp where you killed the trash mob. Once Vazruden runs up to the tank (as when he hits the ground, the tank is in combat and cannot charge), have him save his intercept and instead just use his D stance taunt to catch his attention. Let him do a 3-sunder, then start the DPS. If you DPS him hard enough, he will be at about 15-20% health before Nazan hits the ground. If not, then Vaz will be at about 50%. That seems to be the trigger for Nazan to hit the ground. This is where the prime strategy is involved.

Once Nazan hits the ground, have the tank throw intercept to try and catch Nazan before he gets to the rest of the party. Have the tank then face Nazan AWAY from the party so no one else is taking damage. Start your heals early, and if you have an off-healer, this fight is VERY simple. Get the DPS to finish off Vazruden, and let the tank focus on Nazan's attention, while the healer focuses on healing the tank. Vazruden isn't that hard. All the tank has to do is get Nazan's attention, keep his aggro, stay back a little, and not attack. That's correct, it's not a typo. If the tank just holds attention the whole time and doesn't attack aside from sunders and taunts, he'll be able to dodge the fireballs on the ground from the fire breath attack. After that, DPS Nazan down.

The most important part of this is to not have the tank attack aside from just keeping Nazan facing him. If you have good enough healers, then FR gear isn't needed at all. My toon is an Arms spec warrior without FR gear, and I did just fine once we used this strat. Subsequent runs in our guild with this strat have also proved successful.

Hope that helps!

* Another alternate strategy (E'Zagarell of Scarlet Crusade)

One big issue in this fight is that the healer is usually the one with all the aggro on Nazan once he finally lands. If the main tank is not paying enough attention, or if his taunt fails, then the healer is quickly toasted.

This strategy requires a druid who has been playing utility infielder -- that is, DPS, backup healer, backup tank -- for most of the instance. He also should have reasonable fire resist gear on. Have the druid do the bulk of the healing during the trash and while fighting Vazruden, until Nazan lands, putting all the healing hate on the druid. As soon as the dragon lands, the druid drops into bear form, charges it, and turns it away from the group.

The druid then tanks Nazan for the rest of the fight. As long as he doesn't remain standing in a flame circle, then frenzied regen should be plenty to keep the druid alive until Vazruden is dead. Note that the flame breath doesn't do a ton of damage, it is the circles on the floor that really hurt. Just focus on moving out of them -- since you've built up plenty of hate already by healing the first part, you don't have to worry about that and you can afford to watch your feet.

(We came on this strategy because I had been invited to the group as the fourth member, planning to main tank. Then the fifth member was a protection warrior, who was, of course, otherwise useless, so he became the tank. Unfortunately, he had very little fire resistance, and we wiped first when his taunt failed, and again when he burnt up faster than the priest and I could heal him.)

*Shadow Priest Tank Strategy

The group's set up was unique as we did not have a Warrior. The make up of the group was Elemental Shaman, Balance Druid, Hunter, Rogue and Shadow Priest. The healer that heals the group during the first 2 trash and Vaz, seems to be the first target Nazan aggros, thus a healing rotation was utilized; priest prior to Nazan's landing and druid+shaman after that. Cloth ~150 FR reduces Nazan's fire damage by 50% . Any potions would help too.

*Ranged DPS alternate strategy (Frankenbeans of Laughing Skull)

For this encounter, Vaz is easy. It's Nazan you have to worry about. And if the group's tank intercepts the dragon too late (healer dies) and/or doesn't position him correctly (anyone besides tank takes lots of breath damage), the group's odds of wiping really go up: Nazan's fire DPS can be pretty rough to deal with. Typically, the healer is Nazan's first victim (heal aggro), and then he just beats down the rest of the group. So, the easiest way to beat this encounter is to burn Nazan down while he's still flying.

Once the tank is engaged with Vaz, all ranged DPS should focus on Nazan while he's still in the air. The trick is to not try to DPS Vaz too much in the beginning (get him down to 50% and then ease up your DPS). You want to beat up Nazan as much as possible before he lands.

Ranged DPS will take minimal damage from Nazan (some fireballs here and there: just don't stand in the rings), so the healer shouldn't be too hard pressed to keep anyone alive. And once Nazan lands, he won't immediately zerg your healer, since he'll want to go after a ranged attacker instead. Ideally, it will be a hunter or frost mage, so they can easily clear aggro--giving the tank time to break off from Vaz and intercept Nazan. Anyway, getting Nazan to under 20% before he lands isn't too tough to do, and it will make this encounter a whole bunch easier to defeat.

*UPDATE (Scaise of Azjol-Nerub)*

Nazan is like Onyxia. Melee damage can hit her even when she's in the air, so melee classes don't need to be trying ranged attacks. Get underneath her and unleash the melee mayhem.
