Strategy
This spell has a big impact on how to play Warlocks. A popular way is to maximise your hit point (using equipment with +stamina), and convert that hit point into mana whenever needed. Because of that, +int and +spirit are usually of less interest than +stamina for a Warlock. See also the usage of [Demonic Sacrifice] of the Voidwalker that can be used successfully in combination with Life Tap. A Warlock in a party with a healer can boost his or her mana if the healer agrees to continuously heal, but use this strategy with care since this uses the healer's mana and the healer often has more important uses for that mana in a party.
Between fights, you should always use Life Tap if you do not have full mana. That way, you will regenerate both hp and mana at the same time. This will effectively increase your regeneration speed of mana.
Downranking life tap in high damage fights can help ease pressure on the healers, though it will reduce your DPS through more frequent GCDs.
Note
- It benefits from effects that increase the spell damage. At rank 3 and above, the base amount of health lost and mana gained increases by 80% of your bonus spell damage effects. Talents and items can further modify those values. Rank 1 and 2 receive reduced effect. It is also affected by and uses charges of the [Zandalarian Hero Charm] (and comparable items).
- Life Tap does not generate any threat.
- The health cost can be reduced by the 8-set bonus of the Plagueheart Raiment.
- The life cost and mana restoration of Life Tap rank 7 increases by one point per level. At level 70, it consumes 582 life to restore 582 mana.
- The life cost and mana restoration of other ranks of Life Tap increase by up to 10 points based on level. At level 70, each rank below rank 7 actually consumes 10 more life and restores 10 more mana than listed in the table above.
