Insane in the Membrane is a Feat of Strength added in the patch 3.1.0. The reward is the title: <[[The Insane
−
The Shen'dralar are an obscure and secretive faction of Highborne who dwell in The Athenaeum within Dire Maul. They are a remnant of the quel'dorei who once populated Dire Maul, or Eldre'Thalas, as it was known in antiquity. Though insular and largely forgotten by the outside world, they are still wise and knowledgeable about a great many secrets including, tantalizingly, the location of the Ashbringer.

 +
Cata-inline This Feat of Strength was originally going to become unobtainable in Cataclysm, but instead will now have its requirements altered. See below for more information.
−
History
−

−
The Shen'dralar were Queen Azshara's most revered arcanists. Within the walls of Eldre'Thalas the Queen's most important demands were processed - often in secret. After the destruction of the Well of Eternity and the subsequent lethargy that overcame the Highborne and lesser night elf sects, the Prince of Eldre'Thalas, Tortheldrin, began construction of pylons now littering the halls of the west wing. The Prince plotted to imprison a demon of immense power, Immol'thar behind a grand force field. The pylons would channel latent energies into the shield, keeping it operational. While imprisoned, Immol'thar would serve as a battery to the populace of Eldre'Thalas. The siphoned energies would sustain the Highborne's magic, allowing those within the walls of Eldre'Thalas to feed their endless and growing magical pangs.

Fannin of Crushridge has taken the time to write an extensive guide on how to do this achievement:
−
Thousands of years passed and the power required to keep Immol'thar imprisoned while sustaining life within Eldre'Thalas began to shift. The cost to keep Immol'thar bound grew to overshadow the rate at which energy could be siphoned and distributed. The once net gain turned to loss. In response to this crisis, Prince Tortheldrin and his Shen'dralar loyalists began murdering their fellow Highborne, sacrificing their victims' life force to fuel the pylons in order to keep Immol'thar imprisoned and preserve their immortality. At least one Highborne, a quest giver named Azj'Tordin, has escaped death at the hands of Prince Tortheldrin, but most have not been so lucky. Their spirits now wander the corridors and courtyards of Dire Maul. Unsurprisingly, Prince Tortheldrin guards jealously the secret of this arrangement, and those who meddle in his domain, such as the blood elf Kariel Winthalus, can expect a brutal end.

It is recommended that you read this guide (in addition to this page) if you are serious about attempting to get "the Insane" title.

With Patch 3.2.2 Blizzard introduced a new Alliance quest near the portals in the Silver Enclave. Something urgent has made the Highborne leave the walls of Eldre’Thalas to seek audience with High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind.

 +
Reputation with Bloodsail Buccaneers is gained by killing NPCs in Booty Bay. Killing Booty Bay Bruisers earns 25 reputation. Other named NPCs will give 1 or 5 reputation. When you reach hostile, guards will spawn at fixed points to attack you. Guards also spawn when you attack lower level NPCs, but not for attacking another guard.

−
Future
−
cat-section

−
According to the event described above and the fact that Night Elves will be able to become Mages in the third expansion, it seems the Shen'dralar will return to the elven society and mold young mages. The Shen'dalar will also become a unobtainable faction in Cataclysm, for that The Insane in the Membrane will not require exalted with the Shen'dralar anymore and a new feat of Strength is going to be give to those exalted with the faction .

 +
First, you can kill non-Bloodsail pirates or Venture Co. NPCs throughout the world. Each pirate or Venture Co. NPC grants full reputation for the "local" Steamwheedle faction to the end of honored and 50% reputation to the other three factions through to exalted. For specific information, see the list of Mobs which affect reputation with Steamwheedle Cartel.
−
Shen'dralar Speculation
−
Speculation

−
With the re-emergence of the Shen'dralar many points of speculation arise:

−
*In Cataclysm they make approaches to rejoin the rest of the Night Elves stating their skills will be needed in the time ahead. Although considering the rejection of the Night Elves of Highborne descendants such as High Elves and Blood Elves, especially as both still use arcane arts it seems unlikely that the Night Elf people will accept the Shen'dralar who are the same Highborne from the War of the Ancients.

−
:This is further strengthened by the current power struggle between Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind and Archdruid Fandral Staghelm. The Shen'dralar seek to approach Tyrande Wisperwind to be accepted back into Night Elf society although speculatively if she does this it could rip Night Elf society apart by giving Archdruid Staghelm the means to denounce Tyrande Whisperwind and shift the balance of power in his favour to be sole ruler of the Night Elf people.

−
*Considering Tyrande Whisperwind was the one who let Illidan the Betrayer out of his prison, involving killing his Night Elf guards including a Keeper of the Grove, it seems likely she would know accepting the Highborne would be a step to far on her part. Of course it is unknown if she would even be open to such a proposal in the first place.

−
*Although yet to be revealed in Cataclysm, the re-emergence of the Shen'dralar might have implications for their descendants: the High Elves and Blood Elves. If they are rejected by Night Elf society they might have to seek out a union with either High Elves or Blood Elves, not just for Elven fellowship but for survival.

−
*The Shen'dralar have sent representatives to the Krin Tor making it likely they would have come into contact with both the High Elf Silver Covenant and the Blood Elf Sunreavers and might seek to forge some sort of political union with their descendants.

−
*The High Elf article states how they are searching for a new homeland in Kalimdor and have been looking in Northern Kalimdor due to the Moonwell’s to supply them with energy because of their magic addiction. Now that the Sunwell has been restored and they receive its power it is assumed they are no longer constrained by such considerations. The Shen'dralar city of Eldre’Thalas, or Dire Maul, could be an ideal location to build a new homeland and learn from their ancestors.

−
*For the High Elves it could be trumpeted as a return to their ancestral Highborne heritage and an end to their reliance on the younger races of the Alliance which the High Elves detest.

−
*The vast majority of High Elves are members of the Alliance of which the Night Elves are also apart of so the Highborne would still be in some form of union with the Night Elves if they came to some sort of union with the High Elves.

−
*Although there is one matter which might cause both Night Elves and High Elves to reject the Shen'dralar, but not so for the Blood Elves. The Shen'dralar’s power and immortality has been derived from the captured demon Immol’thar, using similar methods the Blood Elves used to feed their own magic addiction.

−
*The Blood Elves use of magic has often been described as careless being compared to the "Highborne of old" of which the Shen'dralar are apart of. Given this and feeding off a demon it seems the Shen'dralar and the Blood Elves might have a great deal ideologically in common which might make for a better political union. Given the Shen'dralar have ancient arcane secrets to teach this could increase the power of the Blood Elves substantially as well as providing Dire Maul as a base of operations in Kalimdor.

−
*Although something to consider is that many of the Shen'dralar were not aware of the means Prince Tortheldrin used to feed their addiction and give them immortality as indictated by the passage regarding his sacrifice of fellow Highborne to keep the deomon bound "Unsurprisingly, Prince Tortheldrin guards jealously the secret of this arrangement". It can be assumed in the storyline that both Prince Tortheldrin and Immol’thar are dead, as there are quests to slay both. Indeed this might have given rise to the re-emergence of the Highborne in the wider world.

−
*We have yet to see but the Shen'dralar could rip Night Elf society apart, give the High Elves a new homeland or make the Blood Elves more dangerous.

 +
The Wastewander Bandits of Tanaris also have a chance to drop Common, which can be turned in, 5 at a time, for 10 reputation with Gadgetzan and 5 reputation with the three other cities.

Reputation
−
Characters automatically become neutral with the Shen'dralar upon first meeting them. From there, it is possible to gain reputation with the Shen'dralar by turning in librams and class books, such as the rare for warriors and rare for rogues. Each libram and class book turned in nets +500 reputation points. Further, turning in librams rewards characters with an augment for their head piece. While librams may be turned in repeatedly, class books may only be turned in once.

 +
Everlook has no local faction that grants reputation. To increase Everlook reputation to exalted, you must kill NPCs for the other three cities or turn in Common to collect the 50% spillover reputation.
−
Completing Neutral awards you 500 reputation.

 +
Alternatively, you can gain reputation in Dire Maul North. Any ogre in the instance has a ~3% chance and named guards have a ~15% chance to drop a uncommon. Take the key to Knot Thimblejack, who is chained up inside the instance. Tell him you found a key and turn in the quest Neutral Icon SmallFree Knot!. This quest grants 350 reputation with all four Steamwheedle cities. When you turn in the quest, Knot will run away and despawn, so you can only turn in one key per instance.
;Insane in the Membrane

−
In patch 3.1.0, a new Feat of Strength has been added, which when exalted with the four Steamwheedle Cartel cities, honored with Bloodsail Buccaneers, and exalted with Ravenholdt, Darkmoon Faire, and Shen'dralar will give the player the title "
the Insane"

 +
You can also turn in materials to Knot to complete Neutral Icon SmallThe Gordok Ogre Suit. This quest gives 75 reputation with all four Steamwheedle cities and can be turned in an unlimited number of times per instance. It requires 4 x Common, 8 x Common, 2 x Common, and 1 x Uncommon. Common drops off all of the ogres in the instance, and you can loot one Uncommon each run from a basket in the corner of the first balcony above Knot. You can also get up to two Uncommon from a box Knot leaves behind when he is released from his chains.
Fannin of Crushridge has taken the time to write an extensive guide on how to do this achievement:

Insane in the Membrane FoS Guide - By Fannin of Crushridge-US

 +
The advantage to the first method is guaranteed reputation. The uncommon is not guaranteed to drop every run, but the pirates will always give rep when killed. Also, you have three zones to grind in, as opposed to a single instance. However, when killing ogres in Dire Maul, there is a chance that librams for your Shen'dralar grind will drop. Enchanters can also disenchant any Rare items for a Rare, which are also needed for Shen'dralar.
There is a section dedicated to reaching exalted with Shen'dralar. It is recommended that you read this guide (in addition to this page) if you are serious about attempting to get "the Insane" title.

Afterwards, you must to turn in 5 x Common to Ravenholdt Manor, for 75 reputation. These junkboxes are attained by rogues via the Pick Pocket skill from level 52+ mobs. Shen'dralar reputation is primarily gained through the turn in of the following librams: Uncommon, Uncommon and Uncommon. All three librams are Unique, so you can only carry one of each at a time. Generally, once all the materials are gathered, the librams are mailed to an alternate character, and mailed back. This will allow you to use an rare upgraded with an rare or bring an Engineer to use rare to access your mail at the NPC for the quest turn ins.

 +
Darkmoon Faire
 +
 +
Darkmoon Faire reputation can be gained up to 2000/6000 friendly using the repeatable quests available involving item turn ins. There are many possible turn ins, which have various cutoffs based on your current reputation. The top tier of turn ins that will always be available are as follows:
 +
 +
:* 10 x common
 +
:* 10 x common
 +
:* 08 x common

 +
After 2000/6000 friendly, a different turn in for the same items will become available. This is so you can gain common, which are not needed for this achievement. Continuing to turn in items will NOT give further reputation.
 +
 +
To reach exalted, you must turn in Darkmoon Cards. By collecting full decks of cards, you can turn in the high level decks for 350 reputation during the Darkmoon Faire, or the low level decks for 25 reputation whether the Faire is running or not (they will summon a quest NPC, even if the Faire is closed.)
 +
 +
All of the Darkmoon Cards can be crafted through Inscription. Each card creation will produce one random card from any of the decks associated with that spell. It is not possible to select which card will be produced, only which possible decks the card may come from. You can trade or sell spare cards in exchange for or to buy cards you need to complete decks.
 +
 +
The trinkets obtained from the card decks are BoE, so you can sell the trinkets to buy more cards. Also, if you know someone who is turning in a deck for a trinket, but does not need the reputation, they can trade you the deck to turn it in for 350 rep and you can trade the trinket back to them.

Steamwheedle/Bloodsail Requirement
 +
 +
No clear consensus has yet been reached on whether or not you must be simultaneously exalted with the Steamwheedle Cartel and honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers.
 +
 +
Initally, players needed to meet both of those reputation requirements at the same time to be awarded the achievement and title. More recently, some players have earned the achievement while hated with the Steamwheedle Cartel and honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers, as long as they were exalted with the Steamwheedle Cartel before they began the grind. However, some players still have to regain their Steamwheedle Cartel reputation, without losing their Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation, in order to earn the achievement.
 +
 +
Responses from Blizzard Representatives have been mixed. In-game tickets have received answers both ways about requiring the reputations simultaneously. There have only been two blue posts on the World of Warcraft Forums regarding this:

Players can grind to exalted with Steamwheedle Cartel before attempting Bloodsail Buccaneers, if they wish. However, it does not appear guaranteed the achievement will be earned this way. Until the requirements are clarified by Blizzard and any existing bugs are corrected, having both Steamwheedle Cartel and Bloodsail Buccaneers at the same time is the only way to guarantee the achievement.

|title=Are You Insane in the Membrane?
 +
|body=
 +
It's a question you've been asking us for a little while now. And, based on all the posts, emails, petitions, and letters we received following the announcement that the Insane in the Membrane achievement would no longer be in available in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, we started to wonder if maybe we had gone a bit loco.
 +
 +
So, we went back to the drawing board. After carefully reviewing all the feedback and discussing the matter amongst ourselves, we're now happy to report that we will be making the following changes to the Feat of Strength:
 +
 +
* Exalted reputation with Shen'dralar will no longer be required. As this is the only reputation that will be unobtainable in Cataclysm, we've simply decided to remove it as a requirement.
For those who already earned Exalted reputation with this faction, don't worry -- we haven't forgotten about your accomplishments. In a future patch, we'll be adding in a separate Feat of Strength to recognize your deep love of Dire Maul.
 +
 +
* Bloodsail Buccaneer faction reputation will remain in-game. Also, to ensure that this change does not negatively affect Cataclysm quest progression in Stranglethorn Vale, Booty Bay Bruisers will now provide reputation up through Exalted.
 +
 +
This will ensure that players will still be able to attain Insane in the Membrane and "The Insane" title in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Please note, however, that these changes will not take effect until The Shattering in patch 4.0.3a -- excluding the separate "Exalted with Shen'dralar" feat, which will be introduced in a future, but currently-undetermined patch.

Reward: Title Reward: <the Insane>

Insane in the Membrane is a Feat of Strength added in the patch 3.1.0. The reward is the title: <The Insane>

Cataclysm This Feat of Strength was originally going to become unobtainable in Cataclysm, but instead will now have its requirements altered. See below for more information.

Fannin of Crushridge has taken the time to write an extensive guide on how to do this achievement: Insane in the Membrane FoS Guide - By Fannin of Crushridge-US. It is recommended that you read this guide (in addition to this page) if you are serious about attempting to get "the Insane" title.

Recommendations for Reputation Gains

Bloodsail Buccaneers

Reputation with Bloodsail Buccaneers is gained by killing NPCs in Booty Bay. Killing Booty Bay Bruisers earns 25 reputation. Other named NPCs will give 1 or 5 reputation. When you reach hostile, guards will spawn at fixed points to attack you. Guards also spawn when you attack lower level NPCs, but not for attacking another guard.

A more detailed list of the NPCs that can be killed for reputation is available in the Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation guide.

When you reach friendly or higher with Bloodsail Buccaneers, visit Fleet Master Firallon in his ship off the south-east coast of Stranglethorn Vale and complete NeutralAvast Ye, Admiral! for the <Bloodsail Admiral> title.

Steamwheedle Cartel

There are two commonly accepted methods for getting exalted with Steamwheedle Cartel without losing your Bloodsail Buccaneer reputation.

The Wastewander Bandits of Tanaris also have a chance to drop [Wastewander Water Pouch], which can be turned in, 5 at a time, for 10 reputation with Gadgetzan and 5 reputation with the three other cities.

Everlook has no local faction that grants reputation. To increase Everlook reputation to exalted, you must kill NPCs for the other three cities or turn in [Wastewander Water Pouch] to collect the 50% spillover reputation.

Alternatively, you can gain reputation in Dire Maul North. Any ogre in the instance has a ~3% chance and named guards have a ~15% chance to drop a [Gordok Shackle Key]. Take the key to Knot Thimblejack, who is chained up inside the instance. Tell him you found a key and turn in the quest NeutralFree Knot!. This quest grants 350 reputation with all four Steamwheedle cities. When you turn in the quest, Knot will run away and despawn, so you can only turn in one key per instance.

You can also turn in materials to Knot to complete NeutralThe Gordok Ogre Suit. This quest gives 75 reputation with all four Steamwheedle cities and can be turned in an unlimited number of times per instance. It requires 4 x [Bolt of Runecloth], 8 x [Rugged Leather], 2 x [Rune Thread], and 1 x [Ogre Tannin]. [Runecloth] drops off all of the ogres in the instance, and you can loot one [Ogre Tannin] each run from a basket in the corner of the first balcony above Knot. You can also get up to two [Ogre Tannin] from a box Knot leaves behind when he is released from his chains.

The advantage to the first method is guaranteed reputation. The [Gordok Shackle Key] is not guaranteed to drop every run, but the pirates will always give rep when killed. Also, you have three zones to grind in, as opposed to a single instance. However, when killing ogres in Dire Maul, there is a chance that librams for your Shen'dralar grind will drop. Enchanters can also Inv enchant disenchant [Disenchant] any rare items for a [Large Brilliant Shard], which are also needed for Shen'dralar.

Ravenholdt

The Ravenholdt grind begins with killing Syndicate NPCs at Durnholde Keep in Hillsbrad Foothills. Each Syndicate member gives 5 Ravenholdt reputation, to the end of honored.

Afterwards, you must to turn in 5 x [Heavy Junkbox] to Ravenholdt Manor, for 75 reputation. These junkboxes are attained by rogues via the Inv misc bag 11 [Pick Pocket] skill from level 52+ mobs. If you do not have or want to level a rogue, you may be able to buy the junkboxes or hire a rogue to farm them for you. Lootable containers cannot be auctioned, but the boxes can be traded and/or mailed.

If you do have a rogue, the most popular location for farming is Lower Blackrock Spire, as any of the orcs and ogres inside can carry the junkboxes. See Farming Heavy Junkboxes for more info.

If you find you're being caught too often, additional points in Subtlety may help, specifically Spell shadow charm [Master of Deception], Ability hunter camouflage [Camouflage] and Spell shadow antishadow [Preparation].

Shen'dralar

Shen'dralar reputation is primarily gained through the turn in of the following librams: [Libram of Focus], [Libram of Protection] and [Libram of Rapidity]. All three librams drop exclusively in Dire Maul and are turned in with a number of other items for 500 reputation each.

All three turn ins require 1x [Pristine Black Diamond] and either 2x or 4x [Large Brilliant Shard]. The diamond is a low drop item in instances such as Stratholme and Scholomance and the shards are disenchanted off rare items from those and similar-level instances.

The turn ins will also require one of the following BoP items: 2x [Skin of Shadow] drop from Scholomance, 2x [Blood of Heroes] are looted from objects on the ground in Eastern and Western Plaguelands, or 1x [Frayed Abomination Stitching] are dropped by abominations in Stratholme.

All three librams are Unique, so you can only carry one of each at a time. Generally, once all the materials are gathered, the librams are mailed to an alternate character, and mailed back. This will allow you to use an [Argent Squire] upgraded with an [Argent Pony Bridle] or bring an Engineer to use [MOLL-E] to access your mail at the NPC for the quest turn ins.

Darkmoon Faire

Darkmoon Faire reputation can be gained up to 2000/6000 friendly using the repeatable quests available involving item turn ins. There are many possible turn ins, which have various cutoffs based on your current reputation. The top tier of turn ins that will always be available are as follows:

After 2000/6000 friendly, a different turn in for the same items will become available. This is so you can gain [Darkmoon Faire Prize Tickets], which are not needed for this achievement. Continuing to turn in items will NOT give further reputation.

No clear consensus has yet been reached on whether or not you must be simultaneously exalted with the Steamwheedle Cartel and honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers.

Responses from Blizzard Representatives have been mixed. In-game tickets have received answers both ways about requiring the reputations simultaneously. There have only been two blue posts on the World of Warcraft Forums regarding this:

Re: [BUG]Insane in the Membrane | 2009-04-18 21:39 by Blizzard Entertainment Dresorull
My understanding of this is that it was never required that you have these criteria met all at the same time. Once you reach the required reputation level with one of the factions, the criteria should be credited.
Re: [BUG]Insane in the Membrane | 2009-04-18 21:39 by Blizzard Entertainment Dresorull
You shouldn't lose the criteria if you gained the reputation to obtain it.

Posters in this bug report thread returned with further evidence that the achievement is not working as intended (whether Blizzard intends it to be simultaneous or not), but no further response has been received on the forums from any Blizzard Representative.

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

Back in 2009, Ancilorn stated that this achievement would not be removed from the game, and that "you don't have to rush to have this done before the expansion."[1] At BlizzCon 2010, however, Greg Street was asked if it will still be possible to get the achievement, to which he responded: "The biggest problem are the changes to the bloodsail buccaneers, that kinda put a bullet in that feat of strength for now. It's fun to do painful things in WoW. If there's a huge outcry for it we'll try to put something equally brute in the game."[2] Days later Bashiok indicated on the forums that it will be impossible for most people to complete this Feat of Strength after Cataclsym.[3]

However, Beta Build 13277 removed Shen'dralar from the criteria,[4] and then a short time later, a blog post on the WoW Community website confirmed changes which will allow the achievement to still be obtainable after The Shattering:

Are You Insane in the Membrane? | 2010-11-10 17:03 | Blizzard Entertainment Lylirra

It's a question you've been asking us for a little while now.
