Growl

Ability Physical Taunt A special form of Taunt, raising pet on the Aggro list by generating a high amount of pure threat. The minimum values for each rank are as follows:

Rank - Level - Base Threat

  • Rank 1 - Level 1 - 50
  • Rank 2 - Level 10 - 65
  • Rank 3 - Level 20 - 110
  • Rank 4 - Level 30 - 170
  • Rank 5 - Level 40 - 240
  • Rank 6 - Level 50 - 320
  • Rank 7 - Level 60 - 415
  • Rank 8 - Level 70 - 664

Scaling

Pet Growl threat generation has a complicated scaling formula based on the rank of the spell, the level of the pet (PLVL), and the attack power of the pet (PAP).

Experiments have given partial information about the formulas. Rank 7 and 8 Growl have been most thoroughly examined.

Each rank of Growl has a minimum power based on the level of the pet. This minimum power scales up from the Base Threat shown above to the power of the next-higher rank. So, rank 7 Growl will always apply at least 415 threat from a Level 60 pet, a level 70 pet will always apply at least 664 threat with rank 8 Growl, and a level 65 pet is in-between, always applying at least 528 threat. The exact formula for the scaling is not clear.

In addition, should the PAP get high enough, it will contribute to the power of Growl. The threshold required scales linearly on the level of the pet. For pets of level 60 and up, the formula is about:

PAP Threshold = 28.14 * PLVL - 1235.6

Once this threshold is passed, every additional point of PAP adds 5.7 points of threat to Growl.

So, for a level 70 pet, the threshold is 734. If the pet has, for example, 859 attack power, each growl will generate:

664 + [(859 - 734) * 5.7] = 1377 threat.

A fraction of the hunter's ranged attack power is translated into PAP and can contribute to Growl's power. Buffs that add directly to pet attack power, such as Spell holy greaterblessingofkings [Blessing of Might], Inv scroll 02 [Scroll of Strength], and Ability trueshot [Trueshot Aura] have a much more powerful effect on Growl. In fact, the Trueshot Aura has such a powerful effect that the pets of Marksmanship-specced hunters tend to hold aggro considerably better than other pets.

One quirk of this formula is that a lower-level pet with the same attack power as a higher-level pet will generate much more threat once the PAP threshold is reached. For example, a level 65 pet with the same attack power as a level 66 pet will generate 133 more threat per Growl.
