Frost giants[1][2][3][4] (also referred as ice giants[5][6][7]) are a type of giant found in Northrend. They primarily belong to the clan[8] of the Sons of Hodir, named after their creator the Keeper Hodir.[9]
History
- Main article: Sons of Hodir
Long ago the titans created "seed races", including giants, to watch the world of Azeroth together with watchers. The clan of frost giants named the Sons of Hodir struck up a friendship with the Titanic watcher Thorim. However, after being corrupted by Yogg-Saron, the Keeper Loken killed his brother's wife Sif, and tricked Thorim into believing that King Arngrim and the frost giants were responsible. In a fit of rage, Thorim threw his hammer, Krolmir, at Arngrim, who was in the middle of a battle against a clan of frost dwarves. The explosion of Krolmir striking the ground killed all those nearby and froze the entire tableau for all time, which is known today as Thunderfall.[8] While Thorim gave into despair and rested in a stupor for centuries at the Temple of Storms, the Sons of Hodir were deeply stunned at such an unexpected betrayal.
At some point, the frost giants who guarded the Temple of Winter were killed by Loken's pet fire giants, and Hodir himself was taken captive in Ulduar.[9]
Wrath of the Lich King
Centuries later, at the time of the war against the Lich King, Thorim discovered the truth with the aid of adventurers serving the Sons of Hodir. He eventually made peace with them, and they in turn have helped him reach out to other frost giants to make amends.[8] After the clash between the brothers ended with Loken capturing Thorim, King Jokkum sent the adventurers to avenge Thorim by venturing into Halls of Lightning, in order to kill Loken.[10]
Legion
By the time of the Burning Legion's third invasion of Azeroth, frost giants had been integrated into Ulduar's defensive systems, serving the Keepers alongside the iron dwarves, iron vrykul, the earthen, and the mechagnomes.[11] When Odyn attempted to unify the titan-forged, some of them were defending Ulduar against the demons.[12]
