Doomhammer is the eponymous signature weapon of the Doomhammer family from the Blackrock clan, passed down from father to son. It was forged for the first of the Doomhammer line generations ago, a noble weapon for a noble line. Although the hilt of the hammer has been replaced, the actual hammerhead itself has endured as a testament of the crafter's skill.

In spite of the name, Doomhammer is a weapon of good, bringing doom to enemies of the orcs and upholding the family's honor. A prophecy stated that one day, when the orcs had fallen to barbarism and evil, Doomhammer would be taken away from the family by the spirits for their crimes. However, the prophecy also stated that, while the Doomhammer family would die out, the weapon would be passed on to another orc, one who would use Doomhammer and its powers to turn the orcs away from evil.

As is the nature of such prophecies, the orcs did indeed fall, all due to the manipulations of Gul'dan and Kil'jaeden. Orgrim, last of the Doomhammer line, passed the weapon on to his protégé Thrall, the one who redeemed the orcish race and completed the prophecy.

Retcon
speculation

The appearance of Doomhammer seems to have undergone a retcon since it was first depicted in the Warcraft II manual. Originally, it bore a jagged blade at the end, two spikes on each side, and was much smaller and shorter. But by the time it was passed onto Thrall in Lord of the Clans, it was much bigger and lacked sharp points. In the cinematic where Thrall and Grom Hellscream battle Mannoroth, the wolf's-head symbol of the Frostwolf clan is clearly seen on the head (this is much more visible at the point just before Thrall throws it at Mannoroth, when it glows brightly, rendering the symbol very clearly distinguishable). The wolf's head symbol was probably added to the greathammer after it was passed to Thrall, since before that time the hammer's head was depicted and described as completely plain, with no markings whatsoever being mentioned. In World of Warcraft it has a unique black metal appearance that resembles a Stormhammer; within the game files however there is an unused Doomhammer model, which resembles the Warcraft III hammer shown in the cinematic against Mannoroth.
