The ship was actually crafted by the [[naaru]], not from [[eredar]]/draenei technology. The ship along with fortress and several other sattelite structures, was granted to [[Velen]] and his followers by the naaru as the method of escape from Argus. 25,000 years later, some of those draenei who were able to escape the orcs managed to get to the ship and take refuge in an alternate dimension. When they attempted to return to Draenor, the ship was assaulted by Kael's [[blood elves]], who were eager to take the ship's powers for their own. The draenei were able to initiate one more planetary jump, and the section of the keep they escaped in, [[Exodar]], subsequently crashed. Fortunately, the planet in question was Azeroth, and the ship landed on the [[Azuremyst Isles]] off the coast of [[Kalimdor]].

The term "Dimensional Ship" is applied to a naaru vessel that can travel between worlds without the use of traditional portals. The term applies to the naaru flagship and current headquarters of Kael'thas, Tempest Keep, but usually refers to the draenei capital, Exodar.

Dimensional Ships are vessels capable of traversing the Twisting Nether just as normal ships traverse the seas. They are created and operated by the naaru.

Such ship are useful when evacuating important populations from the encroahment of the Burning Legion. K'ure's rescue of the draenei is the best example.

Naaru Ship

A Naaru Ship Concept Art.

More powerful version of dimensional ships are called "dimensional fortresses."

Though Metzen discourages Sci-Fi connections, Dimensional Ships probably work like "hyperdrive" or "slipstream"; that is, the ship enters sub-spatial dimension (the Nether or alternate dimensions) to traverse space (the Great Dark Beyond) more quickly. This doesn't mean that Tempest Keep simply teleport- movement through the alternate dimension still occurs, it merely enables much faster travel. Hence, when the Exodar crashed, it probably materialized in the sky above the Azuremyst Isles and, unable to fly in the material dimension, fell to the ground. It is worth noting that Christie Golden, the author of Rise of the Horde is an experienced writer of Star Trek: Voyager novels, and thus should be able to explain the technical aspects of dimensional ships with relative ease.
